So the Baptist Cgurch down the road opened a coffee bar in their
multi-purpose use building. It's really nice, like a Starbucks.

Now, if only I could talk them into applying for a liquor license.

1. There's a church in London with a liquor license.
They also have a cafeteria-style restaurant in the basement. If I could get a cheap vegetarian meal and a beer at my Church, maybe I wouldn't have quit going. Actually, I still would have quit Mass...would've stopping in for a beer once in a while though.

4. All Saints' Margaret Street.
Plenty of others serve alcohol after the main Sunday service.

The Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church both run on alcohol, there's no doubt about that (I speak as one currently hovering between the two).

10. My sister-in-law teaches at an Episcopal private school.
She'd taught in public schools previously. The first time she went to a parent/teacher meeting, wine was served! She was amazed.

(Her kids went to Public School & did great.)

2. Catholic Churches drink beer on the premises
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 10:44 AM by DaveTheWave
I was invited to a St. Patrick's Day party at a co-worker's church one time with green beer served on the premises and the post Catholic priest at Ft. Gordon (1981) used to have the nuns serve up bar-b-q and beer to the recruits occasionally.

5. My dad used to run a St. Patty's Day party at his church with grren beer
and guinness. They had to get a permit to serve beer, but it only cost like $20. Its a pretty nice party, with great live irish music, the local irish step school sends the kids to jig and good food.

6. Does the price of a coffee include a sermon?
I think the Baptists and other religions are in serious trouble cash-wise and need something to keep the flow going.

their wives go without a 2007 SUV. I live in Southern Baptistland.

There are also lots of Catholics, but I don't think they serve beer regularly. Besides, I want wine and an occasional gin & tonic or gin martini. Or Bloody Mary.

Oh yeah -- no sermon with the coffee.

9. My church has a coffee shop and bookstore
There is free coffee on Sundays in fellowship hall, but the fancy coffee is not free.

My UCC sister was kind of critical of the idea of profit-makers in a church building, but when I explained to her that it was a self-help bookstore, that AA/NA attendees can buy their literature there (which you can't buy at regular bookstores), and that the profits from the store bailed the church out during some hard times, she understood a little better.

As long as they never put an ATM in it. I think I would quit over something that sacreligious.

11. Wow, that's almost like the Maranatha Ice Cream Parlor...
Edited on Thu Jun-08-06 01:30 PM by NewWaveChick1981
..I visited in college. Well, I didn't KNOW it was a Maranatha Ice Cream Parlor. There was a big dorm-sponsored event (or so it appeared---no indication it was anything else) in the basement rec room one night, and everybody piled in there since a) ice cream is good and b) it was freakin' hot with no a/c in the dorm. Everyone did the "make your own sundaes" thing, and then as we were having a nice time talking and all, two of the Maranatha cultists started talking. They thanked us for attending, and they said they had some entertainment for us. Everyone sort of stopped in their tracks, and then the fun began.... skits, puppets, etc. :yoiks: No one could leave because the leaders had stationed two of their own at the door... :yoiks: About 25 of us were trapped in the basement with ice cream and religion for about 30 minutes... :scared:

This was at a very liberal public university in the early 80s. Maranatha had just decided to infiltrate my particular school during that time, and they made themselves known, especially for the "backward masking" fliers they put up all over campus. Ya know, "I Buried Paul" and other such Satanic recordings.... :P

(This had very little to do with the coffee shop discussion---I just thought it was interesting and weird! :hi: )
