Well, DU Movie Critics keep up their track record...
Usually, when DUers hate a movie, we end up liking it. Today's movie was no different. X3 has been panned by the DU Critics for a couple of weeks now. Well, I'm here to tell you, it was really good. There was a couple of moments where the dialogue was a little weird, but other than that, we highly enjoyed this movie. Sure, it didn't stay with the comics 100%, but neither did the first one, what with everyone being younger than they were in the comics, etc. We really enjoyed the movie. It made us cry, laugh, made us a little angry. It did it's job. We'd recommend it.

1. Yup the elitist peanut chewers here were clueless.
It was great. Going to a non-documentary means

SUSPEND YOUR DISBELIEF

Something too many can't do. Entertainment, something critics never understood.

Imagine if we had all listened to them in 1977 when Star Wars came out.

20. "Elitist peanut chewers"? I take that very personally.
Actually, I'm more of a popcorn chewer, myself...

2. I stopped reading reviews about 3 years ago...
I got tired of missing good movies because some bunch of critics decided that if it wasn't hard, gritty, reality and angst or Shakespeare, then it was crap.

Fie upon thee Critics!!! Fie!!! :P

I liked X3 too.:)

5. Oh, I know...
but a nitpicky DU review isn't that much different than a "professional" nitpicky review a lot of the time. ;)

6. I should stop, too
I don't follow them - why should I read? I guess it's the entertainment fan in me that is curious about what people are saying. Just as movie reviewers are like you describe, music reviewers want dark, experimental, and gritty. Those qualities can be admirable, but they don't set the standard for good music IMO.

As far as DU goes - I'm a little harder on movies, so I might agree with DUers more on movies. But certainly not all the time.

8. Well, to be honest, I do read them-- after I've seen the movie...
I don't mind a hard critique as long as it's good. On DU I know that most people will say why they did or didn't like a film in an intelligent fashion (even the nit-picky ones ;)) and I can judge for myself whether it's likely to be a movie I want to see.

Many "professional" critics seem to have unrealistic expectations about movies going in, "The Da Vinci Code" is a prime example (haven't seen it yet); critics snarling that it's one of the worst films ever; average movie-goers shrugging and going "Were the critics on crack? It wasn't nearlythat bad!"

*must stop before I start ranting*

4. I was one of the naysayers--then I saw it again--
---and I now think I was just being too nitpicky. I've been an X-Fan since 1963, and I have *very* definite opinions on them all, and especially the Phoenix Saga... Seeing it again, I realize that I was enjoying it. It is a good film, if maybe not quite as good as #2, but still a solid effort. Mea culpa...

7. I saw it for the second time this morning. I think its great. *Spoiler*
I completely freaked when Mystique got 'cured'. She was my favorite second only to Magneto who also was 'cured'

I'm hoping Erik's game of chess is an indication that the cure isnt permanent.

And did you see the bonus scene after the credits?

9. Oh Yes!!!
I"m one of those people who stay till the lights come up, (where else am I going to hear the soundtrack on that kind of audio system?) much to the chagrin of whoever I may be seeing the film with.:D

It could make for some interesting casting in the next movie (and you know there will be another one.);)

11. I've not seen it yet, but one reliable source has said
X3 has too many characters with little character development.

Not enough for me to not go see the movie, but it is disconcerting; the previous two had lots of solid character development.

15. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call it "really good".
It was "good enough" to me, but yes, you are right - it was a fun romp, had some good moments, some great crap blowing up, and they showed the power of The Pheonix very well.

But, even in the realm of superhero movies, it's just good.

And for some reason, I didn't think Patrick Stewart was doing his usual stellar job - he seemed a little off to me. Did you get that impression? I thought he was so excellent in the first two, and in everything he's done, but this one felt like he just wasn't fully there.

29. Foley work was fantastic! In fact, all the sound was wonderful.
I saw it in a Dolby theater, not a THX one, so I don't know the full extent of the sound, but they made great use of the surround option and did it very well.

17. A movie based on a comic book about superheroes with lotsa special effects
Forgive me if I don't bust down the front door to assure a good place in the front of the queue. Sounds like every shitty big-budget Hollywood piece of shit out there for the last twenty years: unoriginal idea, melodramatically executed, aimed at ten-year-olds. I'll pass.

Tell me when the next "American Splendor" is out, and I'll be the first in line to see it.

30. The opening is now scheduled for June 28, to take advantage of
several days before the long Fourth of July holiday. (July 4th is on a Tuesday this year.)

"Superman Returns" is expected to have the biggest opening this summer.

Here's the list of movies from www.us.imdb.com:
Superman (1978)
aka "Superman: The Movie"
Superman II (1980)
Superman III (1983)
Superman Returns (Opens 06/28/2006)

Have a great week!

21. There's a difference between...
...opinions and reviews. Some of the DU critics are insignificant, amateur opinionists trying to convince everyone else as they have convinced themselves, that they're a talented, qualified, non-biased reviewer out to save the world.

Call them for what they really are, just opinions.

24. I just saw it today...*spoilers*
I give it a 6, out of a possible 10. The action scenes, the house, and golden gate bridge/alcatraz scene made this movie decent to me. The rest of it, to me...was cramming, as many mutants as possible into this flick...I do have to give an honest nod to Kelsey Grammer, his Beast portrayl was pretty damn good.

The story, had way to many mutants in it, and a few of the mutants that were character driven in the previous 2 flicks were killed pretty quickly, aka Cyclops(didn't even get to see what Phoenix did to him), and Patrick Stewart, during the house action sequence. Also, the way in which Magneto acted towards Mystique after she jumped in front of the Cure/Needle, and he just let her lay there and walk off, that was, IMO very out of character for Magneto.

But, to cut it short short, to many mutants, in this flick, way to many...and they didn't dedicate much time to some major mutants. They did do a decent job on the Juggernaut also, even though he isnt a mutant, his scenes were pretty interesting to say the least, it would have been awesome to have him more involved. And, there were a wide range of mutants, both xmen/brotherhood, which didn't get hardly any screen time...but thats my two cents...:)

6 out of 10...it was worth my 4 dollar matinee to see...:) I can't wait to see superman returns...I just wish, Singer could have done both Xmen 3, and Superman Returns, I do believe, if Singer did stay with the Xmen franchise, the movie would have been a bit better...:)

And comparing it to the comics? They really took away from the characters in this flick, and made some substantial changes to the mythos of some of the characters...but that happens, when you go from page, to screen...
