The new job didn't work out
I'm back from training at the new job I was telling you guys about. I didn't make it. I don't know if I told you guys or not, but I am a big guy. I have the build of an offensive lineman only I'm not quite as tall as those guys. It turned out to be my downfall.

I made it through orientation and the physical okay, then they sent us down to South Carolina to train on loading cars. We would have to load all types of cars from little 2 seater roadsters to big ass SUVs. I could load everything okay but the little BMW Z4 roadster.

To load the cars you have to stick your upper body out of the driver's side window so you can see the tires on the left side. You have to be able to see those tires so you can guide the cars onto the trailer using a line that's painted on the floor of the trailer. The Z4 is a 2 seater with a very low roof. I would stick my left arm out of the window then my head. Then my right shoulder would get jammed on the ceiling. I couldn't get out of the car far enough to see the tires no matter how much I limbered up, adjusted the seat, and wedged myself out of the window. Since I couldn't safely load that car I had to call it quits.

I'm not giving up on my search for a better job, though. I have two potential candidates right now that are better than my current employer (I went casual with them so I could come back without rehiring if I wanted). One wants me to go for a drug screen tomorrow. I've got that one sealed up if I want it. I haven't heard from the other one yet. I'm going to call them first thing in the morning and see if they are interested. If they say no or can't give me a straight answer then I'm going to go with the company that already wants to hire me. They run dry vans and reefer trailers cross country. The mileage rate is lower than my current employer, but they have better insurance and all kinds of bonus incentives. The recruiter told me that their guys can bring home $1000 a week if they want to work for it. I've got no problem with hard work. As a matter of fact it makes me sleep better at night. The most I've been able to bring home at my current employer is about $750 a week and I don't get that every week.

So I'm still in the game. With either of those companies that I'm interested in I will be a long haul, irregular route truck driver. I think that's what God made me. Or I guess maybe I could have played offensive line for the Bengals if I'd applied myself at sports. ;)

3. Thank you
I'll get things worked out. Now that I've gotten a little taste of something new I realize that I was overdue for a change. Even though I didn't get the job in South Carolina I'm still going to view it as a positive experience.

6. Thank you sir or ma'am
I will always be here to chat with my DU buddies when I have the time. Eventually I may buy a lap top so I can do live reports from the road. :)

A reefer trailer is not a big box filled with ganja. That's what I thought the first time I heard the term. It's actually a big box with a refrigerater unit on the front of it. It can haul refrigerated and frozen food. Hence reefer for short.

8. Thanks
There is always a new opportunity in the trucking industry. I just need to get out there and sell myself. I'm a valuable person to most trucking companies. I've got a lot of experience and when I go to work for someone I tend to put some time in. I'm confident that something will come along that suits me.

10. Thanks, Peggy
Some drivers change jobs like they cahnge their underwear. Once a month. ;) For that reason most trucking companies are always hiring. I don't have to look too far to find a good job.
