Here are the members I'm including in this topic: yourself, mother, father, wife or husband, grandparents, brother(s), sister(s), and in-laws.

If a family member is dead, you can post how they were.

Here's how my family is:

Mother: Democrat - about as liberal as I am
Father: Democrat - he's gotten to be nearly as liberal as I am
Grandparents - mother's side: grandfather is a Democrat and big Roosevelt admirer; grandmother was also a good Democrat
Grandparents - father's side: grandmother is ignorant of politics and votes Repuke; I think grandfather was the same way
Husband or Wife: N/A
Brother(s): N/A
Sister(s): N/A
In-laws: N/A

1. Here's mine:
Me: liberal tree hugging hippie freak and way left;
Mother: Newly dem. Waking up. Voted Bushy first round, now, hates him (thank you very much);
Father: Deceased, however very much an old school GOPer. However, today, he'd be one of the vets protesting the war and voting "anyone but Bush/GOP";
Grandparents: Both deceased, however all 4 would be leftish at this point judging by what I know about them;
Wife: If I had one, she'd be as freakish as I am;
Brother: As Republican as they come. Probably thinks * walks on water at this point;
Sister: n/a
In-laws: n/a

2. I'm sure many old-school GOPers are against Bush
Bush isn't conservative - he's a right wing corporatist.

6. My Family
Me: extreme liberal
Husband: Liberal all the way (wouldn't have married him if he weren't)
Dad: deceased, die hard democrat
Mom: whenever I asked her who she voted for she'd respond "Howdy Doody," pretty much a dem though

7. Mine
Me: Pragmatic, active Democrat.
Mother: Very private about her vote, but votes in every election. Disinterested in the partisan process but leans left.
Father: Very active Democrat, although he only got involved in politics during the last few years. He's now an officeholder in his CD's party organization.
Grandparents - mother's side: both dead, no idea how they would have voted
Grandparents - father's side: Grandmother is a staunch and longtime Democrat; my grandfather doesn't talk politics
Husband or Wife: Not married. My SO's an independent. "Is he a Democrat?" "No, mom." "How could you of all people date someone who's not a Democrat?" "He's to the left of me, mom."
Brother(s): N/A
Sister(s): One sister, kind of like my mom but waking up -- she thinks Bush is an idiot and hates NCLB. (She's a teacher.)
In-laws: N/A.

8. Me: NDPer
My late mother - she never told me how she voted. She would be an NDPer at heart.

My father - votes Conservative, because we all know John Diefenbaker is still at the helm.:eyes: Considering he's pro union, believes in universal health care and lots of social programs - but is Catholic and doesn't like gay marriage and is a misogynist, so wouldn't like to see more women in government. Most issues coincide with NDP, but he'll never vote that way.

My oldest sister - Conservative (she's not a fundie, and believes the same things that my father does; health, social programs, also Catholic)

Sister #2 - New Age Redneck. Is it possible? I don't know which takes precedence, but I think she'd vote Conservative because she wants lower taxes. Meanwhile, all 4 of her kids have broken every frigging bone in their body among other health crises, and so have used a very generous portion of the provincial health care budget.

Sister #3 - Natural Law party. Just because she's out of it.:crazy:

Brother - Libertarian. I don't think there is a liberatarian party here, but he's definitely one.

Maternal grandmother - fuck the government. (she was screwed around by them as a widow in the Depression, and hated them after that)

Never knew 3 of my grandparents, and don't know much about them.

I think your father and older sister are in the closet Dems... It is okay to be a house wife and stay-at home mom and live your life that way if you choose. The Catholic values also coincide with the Dem platform more that the Repug.... How can we help them become more comfortable in their "awakening"?...... I think your Dad might be in a generation gap and doesn't realize he's actually a Democrat....

:)

Edit to add: Sis #2 - I could also be called a "new age redneck"... I like NASCAR, Country Music and would rather be at a bon fire drinking beer, wearing a flannel shirt than in a night club on a Saturday night... but it doesn't have anything to do with my politics.... (let her know that not all the "cool kids" think Republican = good" lol.

20. I think they would be
if they were in the States...

ALL of my family hates Bush. We have rednecks here in Alberta in pickup trucks that HATE Bush. It's a national pastime, right up there with hockey and beer. :-)

New Age redneck, for her, is being a reiki master, yet not allowing others to have any opinions, being interested in spiritual matters, but gays shouldn't marry...having a big ass pickup truck and love looking down on the little people in cars and cutting them off, etc yet believing homeopathy is the greatest thing.

Every person is complex, but there are some interesting contradictions within her...two totally different energies. :shrug:

Grandparents - mother's side: Grandma was a good dem. I don't know about my Grandfather or her later husbands.

Me: probably the biggest lefty in my family...would NEVER consider voting Republican

Dad: Republican lite, He claims he's an "independent" but that is code for "I'm to chickenshit to register Republican"...won't tell me who he voted for in 04, and for the life of me, I can't figure it out either

Mom: Leans left, voted for Perot in 92, Clinton in 96, regretted not voting in 00 (she lived in F'ing Florida!!!) and definitely voted Kerry in 04. Hates Bush, and can't stand to even watch him on the TV after the Katrina debacle

Grandparents (mom's side): Grandmother died when I was 8, so no clue, but she was a staunch Catholic, didn't really know my grandfather

Grandparents (dad's side): Other grandmother died when I was 8 also, so no clue. Grandfather was a "classic northeastern Republican" meaning liberal on social issues but hated taxes. Probably would have thought that Bush was a bumbling idiot...was also disgusted by the Clinton witch hunt.

Uncles: Only know the ones on my dad's side. One has never registered to vote and the other is a Republican like my father and I'm not sure he knows why.

Aunts: Again only know the ones on my dad's side. Both are centrist Democrats, dislike Bush but are pretty much apolitical

17. A lot of Elephants in my family
Me - Began voting in 1971 as a Democrat (Southern, I grew up in the South although my parents grew up in South Dakota) 1971-1976, Republican 1978-2000 and Democrat 2004- . Fiscally conservative (which now is a Democratic trait) generally a civil libertarian and becoming increasingly progressive on other issues. In recent years have changed to anti-death penalty and pro-socialized medicine.

Mother - staunchly Republican. Never wavered in belief that Joe McCarthy was right etc etc. Very anti-FDR (very very anti Eleanor Roosevelt). Thought Ronald Reagan walked on water. Her only progressive issues pro-choice and eventually she became anti-Vietnam War as I approached draft age.

Father - moderate Republican, voted for Kennedy over Nixon

Maternal Grandfather - very Republican, anti-FDR
Maternal Grandmother - apolitical

Paternal Grandfather - somewhat Republican
Paternal Grandmother - a Democrat (from a Republican family)

wife, siblings, in-laws - N/A (unmarried, only child)

Me: Old ex-hippie leftie.
Dad: Old school Republican, not neocon, but for some reason gets mad when I criticize Bush.
Brother #1: Lukewarm Republican; thinks Bush is stupid.
Brother #2: A bit to the right of Darth Vader, but not fundie; politics based mainly on hating taxes. His wife is worse.
Everybody else, both sides of the family, as far back as anyone can remember: Republican. I'm the one and only exception.
