Poll question: How Many Times Have You Been A Bridesmaid?
(... or a groomsman?)

I've been a groomsman twice, and I was (FORTUNATELY) able to return the rented tuxedo... but WHAT do the bridesmaids do with those one-of-a-kind can't-wear-anywhere-else hideous-pastel-combination poofy-sleeves giant-bustle ugly-bow hyper-trendy-outdated-tomorrow dresses?

1. Never a bridesmaid
Only a bride once.

I was a flower girl, and a junior bridesmaid.

3. I've never been a bridesmaid.
I was a bride once, and I will be a ring-bearer at my sister's wedding in October.

And did you EVER have an opportunity to wear that dress again?

24. Yes I had to buy them...One was a Yicky Snow White type confection
that my daughter enjoyed playing dress up in. One was kind of like a really ugly flower patterned table cloth with a huge butted bow on the back. Get this, she ordered those because she "just knew" we could wear them again. The third was a maternity gown... that had to be cut down from a size 24 to a 6 because I lost the baby. It was ordered huge because we were unsure of how HUGE I would be. I didn't have to worry about it, but it looked ridiculous after all the gathering and tucking and sewing after the loss. I threw it away after the wedding. Bad memories.

Or did you come up with something unique each time?

I like weddings all right--or at least, the two to which I've been :D--but I would not like to bridesmaid for someone. I WAS flower girl at the first one, when I was four, but I don't really remember that.

17. It is a pretty easy job.
Just ask the people coming in if they're with the bride or the groom and then seat them accordingly. Simple.

19. Twice a bridesmaid, both in the same weekend
I was in my friend's wedding on a Friday night. On Saturday morning, I flew to my mother's wedding a couple states away for their afternoon wedding.
Neither dress fit particuliarly well even though the one for my friend's wedding had been altered to supposedly fit me well. I did not try on the dress for my mother's wedding until I got there. The smallest part of the dress was half way between my breasts and stomach, which is large on me because my rib cage sticks out. I barely managed to zip up the dress. Now that I am thin, I tried it on again. Although it is not tight at all in any spot, I realize that it is definitely not for my body type and I wonder if it is really for anyone's body type. Why would that be the thinnest part of the dress?

20. I've been a best man twice, and a groomsman a few zillion times.
Based on that experience, when it came time for me to marry, I eloped.

I never wore the dress again, but it stayed in a bag in the basement for more than 30 years until I tossed it prior to the recent move.

25. Let me take this opportunity to just rant.
Why can't the bridezilla godbitch just let her bridesmaids wear dresses they like and already own, or at least offer them options of buying dresses that are wearable, classic, and usable in other places; and why can't bridezilla godbitch just let the men wear classic tuxedos, or even dark suits? If we could get the bridezilla godbitches to do these, then most men would likely just buy a tux, knowing that they would then have something to wear no matter how many weddings they get asked to be in, as well as have a tux that's actuallyusable in other special occasions.

I have two sensible, practical, and friendly friends who, when they got married, simply chose the fabric they wanted for the bridesmaids, and let every bridesmaid decide what style they wanted and then the bride's mom made the dresses - if I remember correctly, one had a sundress made, one had a skirty thing made, one had a long dress, and I can't remember the others - they all had dresses that fit them, and the pattern of the fabric was such that they could wear them anywhere, and they all had an outfit that was also in the style of outfit that they normally would wear. The men had rented tuxes, but they had classic beautiful black ones, and the bride's mom made cummerbunds out of the dress fabric. It was wonderful!

I also think it should become policy that the bride and groom pay for all the dresses and tux rentals - I think it's bullshit that they require their attendants to spend so much money on shit they'll never wear again beacuse it's either too fucking ugly or a rental.

27. because it's the "bridezilla godbitch's" day and it's up to them
the person doesn't have to be in the wedding. the "bridezilla godbitch" should be able to have what she wants on her wedding day.

30. But it's not her day - it's her and her partner's day in conjunction
with the community.

And "she should be able to have what she wants on her wedding day" is just the kind of ridiculous permissive bullshit that has slowly help the otherwise nice and beautiful wedding day degenerate into a hellstorm of of self-obsession, whininess, bitchiness, and anxiety.

The ones who think the day is all about them have miserable wedding experiences. The ones who think it's a day of happy happy joy joy with friends and family that, while it focuses on her and her partner, isn't about her specifically - they have wonderful wedding experiences. And so do their friends.

28. I agree that making people pay for that is BULL.
However, as Ava above said, it IS the "bridezilla-godbitch"'s day. If she wants to dress people up weirdly, fine--all I would ask is that she pays for it. If she wants me to pay for it, I had better have at least some say in the matter of what I'm wearing.

29. And if she is asking what you would like to wear, and/or pays for it,
then she's not a bridezilla godbitch.

The bridezilla godbitch is the one who DOES think the day is all about her, and that she is entitled to everything and anything she wants because IT'S HER SPECIAL DAY boo hoo hoo boo hoo hoo.

No, it's THEIR (the couple's) special day to share in a religious ritual of vow-making with their friends and family - it's THE COMMUNITY'S special day.

Some women get too bent out of shape about the importance of their wedding day, and instead of being a happy happy joy joy occasion, it becomes their little self-obsession, like they're parading the promenade after winning the Miss America pageant.

Those are the ones I call bridezilla godbitches - the ones who think the day IS all about them.

For my wedding, I just had my sister as the maid of honor in my wedding and let her pick out her own dress that I OKed and she paid for it.

However, I have sung in more weddings than I can count. I studied voice in college, so I guess you could say I'm a pretty sure bet.

Ave Maria is a very popular choice.

35. Only a bridesmaid once, at a small
hippie-type wedding in 1968. I was the only bridesmaid, so i got to pick what I wanted to wear. And I wore it again, but it was not very formal. Not sure why no one else ever wanted me as a bridesmaid. I used to think it was because I wasn't pretty enough.

Rose jacquard satin - puffy sleeves - full skirt. :puke:

The other was better, we picked our own dresses, the only stipulation was that it should be black. Some friends are wonderful.
