2. Want the story? Get comfy...
K.. well, I grew up in a small town conservative state. I won't say which one just because I like some amount of privacy. Back when I was 18 (and didn't follow politics that closely) I natrually picked the party that all of my friends and everyone else around me picked, because, well.. where I grew up being anything else was kinda like growing a third arm, I didn't think anything of it at the time...

And then I got older. The first Election I was was old enough to vote for was Dole. vs. Clinton. I used to like Dole... Mostly because everyone around me in my little town liked Dole.... Well, until I actually looked at his policies. I'm a non-christian and the more I looked at who was supporting his candidacy, and some of the other policies they supported, the more uncomfortable I felt.. I voted for Clinton, but voted Rep. on my local candidates.

Fast forward 4 years... I was excited about this election. In the four years since the last presidential election I had matured into thinking of myself as a moderate. McCain was running for president. My party at the time actually had someone who was somewhat bipartisan, at least to the extent that I felt comfortable voting for him... But he didn't make it past the primaries... Bush Jr. did...

Bush vs. Gore... With my candidate gone I was down to two people that at the time, I admittedly didn't want. Bush Jr. was slow and had the extreme policies that made me vote "against" Dole.. I actually didn't mind Clinton too much, the Economy prospered with him in office, and despite the way the people in my little town talked about him, I found him to be pretty centrist. I admittedly didn't know as much about Gore, but I figured I'd rather have someone more like Clinton than Bush Sr.... I voted Gore.

And then there was the Florida Recount...
And then there was 9/11 - The endless pandering and flag waving....
And then there was Iraq...
The Economy - I'm unemployed now...

And in the meantime.. the whole party kept moving further Right... Or maybe I was moving further left, I honestly can't say.

I'm finding that when I watch the house votes I'm routinely rooting for the Dems...

I'm finding I'm excited about the prospect of someone getting Bush out of office...

I find myself battling conservatives on the Yahoo boards.. the same people who were once my friends.... Well, they're still my friends, but I don't talk politics with them unless I want to spar ;-)

I find myself on DU and agreeing with 90% of what people say.. Not in that "Dittohead" way, but in that well researched, made my own opinion after carfully thinking about it way that you people have so nicely set a precedent for. *Thank you, by the way*

Screw it, I'm a Democrat... I moved out of my small town anyway! :dem:

4. Thanks! Nice story!
I know an awful lot of people who vote Republican for the same reasons you mentioned. Almost as an undivertable force of history. I often find many of these people espousing viewpoints that are very moderate or even left.

Thanks for breaking the cycle, and a belated welcome to the Left.

6. Great story!
Thanks for sharing and welcome aboard!

I hope you have about 5MM friends that can relate to the truth!

I mean why would anyone in the middle-class vote against their best interests? Beats the hell out of me....

McCain is alright in my book. Unlike the Chimp in Chief-he was a real warrior.

11. Welcome to DU, POed_Ex_Repub
I think your story is typical of many here. You watch cspan and did your own research and reached your own conclusions independently. When I found DU I was amazed that there were others like me who had researched carefully and came to the same well thought out conclusions. I am no longer out-of-step Charlie.

:hi:

Nice post, I think you'll like it here and we will enjoy more of your wit and wisdom as well.

12. Bravo!
The biggest thing that gives me hope about the next election are stories like yours. I know *several* former republicans who are now vehemently anti-Shrub. I've yet to meet ONE former Democrat. (Well....Zell Miller, but fuck that guy.)

13. the party moved right
It's possible your positions barely changed at all.

Just a few short years ago (OK, 10) there were pro-choice Republicans here in Minnesota. One of them got elected governor. But the pro-lifers and the "Taxpayers League" took over. At least one Republican politician switched parties on the abortion issue. Nationally, repubs went from favoring an increase in the exemption threshhold for the estate tax to doing away with it altogether. If it wasn't for Clinton, welfare reform (and let's face it, welfare needed to be reformed) would have been welfare abolishment. The Republican party has moved farther and farther to the right, to the point where not just LBJ's Great Society but FDR's New Deal are considered socialist abominations. And the religious rhetoric has gotten out of control. John Ashcroft thinks dancing is sinful. Can you imagine someone like that being taken seriously on the national scene in the 80s? Bush spoke at Bob Jones University - an unacredited college where they teach creationism, the Pope is called the anti-Christ, and women aren't allowed to wear pants. That's a disgrace as far as I'm concerned. Kudos to you for opening your eyes and thinking for yourself.

14. That is very much like how I became a Dem
Welcome to DU :hi:

My experience including 3 years in the Army, I saw the society that Republicans dream for-you have your place, you know your role, any dissent will not be tolerated, if you have a complaint complain to the people who told you to do it in the first place but only after you have actually done it.

Like that.

You are a better person than I am; I actually voted Repuke several times! (mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima, well, you know the rest). Bush I in 1988, again in '92. I voted for Clinton in 1996, and Gore in 2000. I'm solidly Dem and a Liberal who can only ask: "What the hell was I thinking those first two elections?!"

Everybody learns sooner or later. Welcome!

edited for spelling and punctuation. We Dems can actually catch spelling errors. ;-)
