What's a good wedding gift?
I have to go to a wedding tomorrow & I don't really know the couple well. (It's the mom of my teenage daughter's friend.) We were invited to go and I don't really want to show up empty-handed. The only thing I can come up with is a gas card.

Ideas?

1. God no, not a gas card. Give cash instead.

2. Cash is appropriate for weddings?
That makes it pretty easy. Thanks!

4. You bet it is. It's ALWAYS appropriate. No matter the ethnicity,
the circumstances, the relationship of the couple to you, it's always appropriate. And appreciated.

5. Cash is always happily accepted
If you wanted to get them a gift, try a small kitchen appliance (food processor, hand mixer, bread baker, etc.) and make sure you include the gift receipt in the package, just in case it is a duplicate gift.

6. Where are they registered?
If you can find out, an appropriate gift could be a click of the mouse away!

Also, it is completely appropriate to have your gift mailed, even though it will arrive after the wedding. A lot of times people don't bring gifts to a wedding anyway.

13. No clue
I doubt they've registered anywhere since it's going to be a small ceremony.

8. Did they register some place?
One of my co-workers informed me that they were registered at Target and Penneys--that that was what people do now--like giving an instant price range for people. The advantage is that at least the people claimed they were interested in the salmon towels instead of the pink and white striped ones, or whatever. Maybe they registered too far to get anything on time--you could get something similar locally or you could go ahead and order and just give them a card on the day of. They will probably have more than enough to keep them busy on the actual day.

18. Oh good heavens, no! Celery is appropriate only at Australian weddings.

You show up with a stalk of celery around here and the groom's mother will shoot you on sight. Honestly RA, you people have the oddest customs.

To the proper American wedding, one must bring either a lovely string bean or a carefully selected sprig of fresh parsley. One may substitute a blanched almond in a pinch, but in that case one must appear in full deep sea diving gear.

I'm sorry, but those are your options.

On edit: Of course, one could earn bonus points by including a thoughtful gift of cash along with the gifts de rigeur.

26. There is a group of people in Peru who also find the celery acceptable.
I think we should embrace our global communities' differing customs.

17. I also recommend cash
it's always appreciated & the couple can spend it on something they really want instead of having to feel guilty about possibly returning something.

22. Go to Shutterfly.com
and get them a gift certificate for a memory book. They are about 50 dollars, but sometimes they run specials. The couple can upload their wedding pix and then put them in the book with narration and it will be printed for them. The quality is excellent. I used them at work. (I am a teacher)

if they aren't registered somewhere. If they have a yard maybe a gift certificate to a garden store.

28. Picture frames are always a welcome gift
In silver or glass frame. Not too expensive, and more than likely will be a gift that will get used for one of the wedding photos.

A nice touch is to place the couple's wedding invite in the frame.
