Phoenix drivers 1st in safety.... LOL
I don't believe it!

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0524safecity0524.html

Phoenix drivers may not be the most polite, but they may be the safest.

People who drive in Phoenix are the least likely to suffer an accident compared with those in the other eight largest cities in the United States, according to an annual study by Allstate Insurance.

That's good news compared with last week's survey that ranked Phoenix as having the second-rudest drivers in the nation, just behind Miami.

1. My theory is that it's so fricken hot most of the time....
Nobody wants to get in an accident for fear that they'll have to egress their air-conditioned vehicle.

4. It's only hot 4 months of the year...
Of course, that depends on what temps you consider hot!

2. they are only safest of the 9 largest cities
which surprises me that they are one of the 9 largest cities, let's see NYC, LA, Shytown, Houston, Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia
I am surprised that Phoenix is bigger than Denver, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Atlanta, San Diego, Dallas. :wtf:

But my home state actually had the safest city :woohoo:

"Among all 200 cities studied, Phoenix ranked No. 75, dropping from last year's 62. The cities in the study that fared best were all smaller metropolises, led by Sioux Falls, S.D.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa.; Huntsville, Ala.; and Chattanooga, Tenn."

Phoenix was a mere #75.

(neener, neener)

3. Phoenix is a fast growing city.
You've never been here or you would know how enormous the Valley of the Sun is! Nice place to live but the story had me laughing about the safety of the streets. My husband was in a car accident a few weeks ago. He wasn't hurt but his car has a lot of damage. And I see accidents all the time! Yep, we have wide streets and lower traffic density but we have some of the worst drivers here you will ever see.

8. yes, I had to look it up
It was #6 in the bogus listing of cities, however, for metro areas it went from 19th in 1990 to 14th in 2000 whereas Twintown was 15th in both years. The top 20

NYC - 21.2
LA - 16.4
Shy - 9.2
Balt-DC - 7.6
SF-Oak - 7.0
Philly - 6.2
Boston - 5.8
Detroit - 5.5
Dallas - 5.2
Houston - 4.7
Atlanta - 4.1
Miami - 3.9
Seattle - 3.6
Phoenix - 3.3
Twin - 3.0
Cleveland - 2.9
San Diego - 2.8
St. Louis - 2.6
Denver - 2.6
Tampa - 2.4

followed by Pittsburgh, Portland, Cincinnati, Sacramento, KC, Milwaukee, and Orlando.

But that was in 2000, so Phoenix may have moved "up"

5. I HATE driving through, in or anywhere in the Phoenix vicinity!
Edited on Wed May-24-06 01:49 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Taligaters, roads under construction for years, people who use their cars to force others into other lanes, horrible and long rush hour times, always accidents being reported on the radio and telling people where NOT to drive because of back ups, delays...and more...:scared: Not as bad as the Los Angeles area, but definitely not good.

I thought I read many times that Phoenix has one of the highest vehicle accident rates in the nation.

When living in Tucson, and traveling north, whenever possible would use I-8 to Gila Bend, and then Hwy. 85 to Buckeye to pick up I-10 again. Sometimes have had to go through Phoenix on I-10 to get to US 60 via the 101 Loop....terrible.

6. High vehicle theft rates
Since we're close to the border a lot of cars get stolen and taken to Mexico.

I think one of the big problems with drivers here is that so many people are from somewhere else. And we get a lot of visitors in the winter and since they don't know their way around and hold up traffic it tends to aggravate the residents of this fair city. LOL
