Labor law question - Unused vacation time
I'm leaving my job. I still have a week's worth of unused vacation time. I work in Washington, DC. Am I entitled to that in my last paycheck?

14. I find it helps target the search a little closer to what I am looking for
a holdover from the old boolean term days I guess.

3. depends on your employment contract
and local labor law. most places do pay for unused leave, and most jurisdictions require that they do.

shd be a # you can call (such as a "labor relations board" to determine your legislated rights.)

4. In most companies, it's use it or lose it.

5. That's not the same thing
"Use it or lose it" means your vacation expires at the end of the year (although some companies let you carry unused vacation over to the next year).

But if you leave, AND if you have unused vacation, many companies will pay you for the unused vacation time.

6. Exactly.
Paid vacation is part of an employee's compensation, and in most places the employee is entitled to be paid for earned but unused vacation time.

Some companies, however, have a policy of paying only half-time for unused vacation, so it's a good idea for any individual with questions about vacation payment to talk to their company's HR department.

13. Varies by company - one company screwed me, another was generous
I worked for a large insurance company for over 10 years... I had 4 weeks vacation, plus carried over a week. I also had 8 paid time off days (sick days, but can be used as vacation if not sick). So, that was 33 in total.

I left that company in March of 2001 and got paid for 4 1/2 days using some complicated formula for accruing vacation days, but losing the PTO and carry over. (I checked on the law on this, too)

However, I left the next company in February of 2003 (also a large insurance company) and had been entitled to 18 or 19 vacation days for that year, 2003, and got paid for every one of them, even though I would have been out almost all of January had I taken all 18 or 19 days.

17. I have always been paid for unused vacation time. It is unused
sick time that usually is lost.
