Unpleasant experience at work today (advice welcome)

Ok, here's the deal. The other day I notice that one of my colleagues has a tiled picture of a Prince (the cover of the 1979 Prince album) set as his computer's background. (i.e. when he logs into the computer, the wallpaper is that picture), so I asked him, why the strange picture? He tells me that when he left his account logged onto a computer and another colleague found it, he set the picture to be his wallpaper.

So today, two people are using the computers in the office, and since I want to check Email before leaving, I sit back and wait for one of them to finish up. While one of them was logging out, I happened to see her wallpaper, and it consisted of a tiled series of my photograph from the web-page of my workplace. I didn't say anything, but the more I consider this, the more I am bothered by it. Am I to take this as an indicator that my visage is considered as much a topic of levity as a 1979 Prince Album? Am I that poorly regarded at work that I'm a joke? This bugs me, and there are a few things that really bug me about it. I don't know exactly who did this. I mean, I know whose wallpaper it still was when I saw it, but I don't know who or if someone decided that would be a good prank. This seems like a hostile action to me. It really made me feel uncomfortable, but I don't know to whom I should complain, or even if my complaint would be considered inappropriate. I really feel like it shouldn't be bugging me, but it does. I'm pissed off that I have to deal with these people every day and I can't quit for over a year (and even then it would be wiser to stay put).

So what do you all think, advice, comments?

I just used to set people's desks on fire when smoking was allowed in the office, or super glued their phones, let air out of their tires, mailed termination notices to their houses as a joke.

This is the first incidence of stuff I've noticed, other than people bitching that my job is cushier than theirs. Frankly I'm disappointed. I used to drive cab with a bunch of ex-cons and everyone was very respectful with each other.

Change your background, or put up something disgusting like a pile of dog shit, just anything and see if they copy it. Or try a good anti-Bishy background. it will either get them to react or get them to stop. Or it could just be paranoia from the pollution in the office.

5. I don't think it would be out of the question to ask the person

who has your photograph as their background to remove it, as it makes you uncomfortable.

I wouldn't automatically think someone was dissing me, though. It may be a prank between officemates, and the people doing it are not very creative (i.e. - the only pic they could find quickly was yours from the internal webpage).

It could be that she or they just like Prince that much.. Who doesn't like Prince? And they went to put it as their background and didn't like how it stretched or thought it was too small by itself, or they didn't know what they're doing? :shrug: Point is, the tile thing is a built in feature of handling the image for backgrounds.. you probably already know that and this post is completely useless. :P

It could, on the one hand, be that she likes your picture and wants it there. If you're assumption that it was put there by someone else is correct, it could be that she and someone else have a specific inside joke about you and/or your picture that may or may not be hostile in nature. I know that's not an entirely appealing thought, but it is, at least, preferable to the office-wide thing that your imagination is forcing on you. Co-workers who are good friends have all kinds of strange "jokes" about other co-workers, at least in my experience. And these jokes are not necessarily even mean-spirited, but simply a shorthand that two close colleagues may have for discussing things at work.

I understand why this makes you uncomfortable, and I don't blame you at all. But it is quite possible that it is not as bad as you think initially.

is really strange. I'm pretty easy-going, but that would really bother me. It is entirely reasonable for you to ask the co-worker WHY your photo is there and ask him/her to remove it.

largely on getting along with others. It's not like the world of DU where cred is built up by pissing off the hosers. These people want decorum, and this is not my strong suit. I think I'm just naturally crusty.

They resent me because I get paid more for what they consider less work and I make my deadlines. They mock me because I buy day-old bread to save money, they say "you only save $1", I point out that $1 is half of the normal price! They then are annoyed because I don't have to work this summer because I saved up enough of my salary to take 4 months off. Maybe if they quit buying $3 cups of coffee, seeing movies, and going our to eat they could do the same, but no it's because I'm some kind of skinflint. And then questions will start getting asked, oh, SHE'S using him as wallpaper? Ok. This girl is just weird. Did she put these pictures all around?

And that will probably put an end to that.
