Question......
I have jury duty tomorrow. What is the appropriate attire when casting judgement upon another? Is jeans and a sweatshirt ok? Or should I be serious and wear a suit and tie?

1. I'd suggest a loin cloth
But only if you're looking to get out of jury duty. :)

4. Seriously...
I usually get a little dressed up. Decent pants and a nice sweater. Sort of business casual, I guess.

11. Business casual--I agree
Some judges like to lecture jury members on appropriate dress. such lectures are best if they aren't aimed at YOU.

6. Judges like smartly dressed folks
Business casual does it.

If you want to be an anti-establishment wise guy and wear crappy clothes, have fun spending 30 days in the clink for Contempt of Court.

7. Do they really fine you for contempt
if you wear crappy clothes?

8. Not usually. You will see the entire gamut at the courthouse.
However, you could get slapped with a contempt citation if you show up with an offensive (I know that's subjective) message on a garment.

12. So I should leave my
Buck Fush t shirt in the dresser drawer? I guess I'll just wear khakis and a dress shirt.

9. tie: definitely
but I don't see the need for a suit.

cords or dockers, buttoned-down shirt, and a tie.

13. OK, I'll add a tie to the khakis and dress shirt...
But I swear if I get the slightest inkiling that the defendant is a freeper, HE'S GOING DOWN!!

15. Okay but not reccomended
Usually the only people in court with a suit and tie on are defendents and attorneys.

DUI defendents usually wear three-piece suits for some reason.

14. Dress comfortably (especially shoes)
Bring a book and a pillow if you can. Chances are, you'll be sitting on a folding chair in a crowded room for a long, long, long time.

16. Thanks everybody...
I guess I'll wear business casual and a tie with comfortable shoes. If I get to be on the jury I'll make sure to give you all the details. If any of you DUers are in Dallas, come on down and keep me company. :-)

17. You'd better not give anyone the details....
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 11:33 AM by southerngirlwriter
....you can get in major, major, major trouble for talking about the case before it's completely over and a verdict is rendered.

I've had jury duty four times (and I'm only 25!!!! That danged computer looooooves me, for some reason....), and I recommend you dress for what you want.

Do you want to get on a jury? Dress up slightly -- khakis, dress shirt, and tie.

Do you want to NOT get on a jury? Then wear jeans, sneakers, and a knit pullover or t-shirt with no messages or advertising on it. That makes for a boring experience in the waiting area; however, you'll generally be sent home for good quicker than if you get on a jury. Also, you can bring a couple of pillows and a big fat novel and entertain yourself as best you can.

Jury rooms are notoriously too hot or too cold; dress in layers and bring a jacket.

I guess since I'm unemployed it's at least something to do to kill a day or two.
