Poll question: Should I go to my 20 year High School Reunion?
It will be a busy time at work, so it will have to be a very short trip. Probably best to leave my son at home. That will be a first.

I had a weird time in High School. I thought everyone hated me. I hated school. But thinking back, I actually had a lot of friends. Certainly everyone knew me.

I did cut school a lot, and most of my close friends were either older or younger, and many were from other schools. I only had a few good friends actually in my class.

I'm a lot FATTER, but other than that, I have an awesome life and am very proud of where I am. I can possibly manage to look hot. ;-)

Open bar.

It's being held 3 blocks from my dad's apartment.

I'm somewhat curious.

All told, it will probably cost about $500 bucks.

1. I couldn't pick just one
You stated several good reasons for going. Based on all of them, you should go, as long as you can afford the money.

3. I went to mine and was glad I did.

I was a geek in high school; didn't hang with the popular kids, who, when they weren't ignoring me completely, teased me for being weird and nerdy. So I kind of hesitated when that reunion came around (I didn't go to any of the earlier ones).

However, it turned out to be great fun. My dorky friends (the few I had) were now successful, interesting and attractive, while the cheerleaders and football big shots were... fat, and in the case of the guys, balding. This one snooty girl who had won a statewide beauty contest turned up in a white jumpsuit which was *not at all* flattering; her ass was now humongous and she looked lumpy and kind of pathetic. Another girl, who had been the class pass-around, now looked like a middle-aged madam. The former geeks now had interesting careers, but the former big shots had obviously peaked at the age of 18.

Heh, heh.

Based on this, consider the possibility that you might experience a Revenge of the Nerds, like I did.

8. I went to mine. I enjoyed it.
It was a lot different from the 10th, which I also attended.

By 20 years, most people have matured and mellowed, and it was a fun experience for me. I'd do it again.

12. Save Your Money
Spend it on a good cause or something. $500 bucks-- Expensive! May be better to just move on. Give your address to the person who wants to take your money and have them give your e-mail address to people you might be interested in perhaps. I didn't connect with anyone in HS and think that I'd wind up feeling hurt because they'd be going thru' memories they'd had of each other at that time and the stuff they did and I'd probably feel cheated because I didn't have the opportunity to do something with them not that I would necessarily have wanted to at the time or would have appreciated the waste of space they might take. You'll need that money for gas.

13. Well, I've never spent a penny on gas...
...since I walk everywhere or take the subway or bus.

I guess, technically, part of my bus fare goes to gas...same for taxi fare.

And I guess I have pitched in for gas on road trips with friends.

OK, so I have spent some money on gas.

It is a lot of money, and I surely don't have to reach out to find worthy people interested in taking it. I could donate to my own organization, or to one of the non-profits I've worked for in the past, or to one of the several dozen organizatins that call or mail every week. I have been meaning to up my annual contribution to the ACLU.

Anyway, I appreciate the pitch to donate the money, especially since I'm a fund-raising executive for a major non-profit. ;-)

25. Hope there's good music food & company if ya go.
Good luck with that. Maybe you can shmooze money out of the people there or ask that they have another point to just having a reunion and donate to your project. That might take the pain out of having to listen to Lynryd Skynrd.

16. In my experience.....
most people have grown-up and changed for the better.

We have not had a reunion yet. It'll be 10 years this year but I've run into people from HS out in the bar or out in the store...people I haven't seen since HS and everyone has been very friendly.

I would go to one of my reunions if we had one. My best friend was VP and my other friend was the treasurer, so I guess they're in charge of planning something.

I guess you can say I was part of the "cool" group in HS...I had a good personality and got along with everyone..so I wouldn't mind going. Plus, I have my life in order and still look like I did in HS so it would be no big deal for me to go.

I say go..You might meet up with people, get along better than you ever did in HS and make it a positive time of it. If it sucks...you can always take advantage of the open bar....get really drunk and go out with a bang! :P :) :hi:

17. Bottom line
if you think you'll have fun go. The best way to have fun is to not care much about what others have done or think of what you've done since then.

My 20th is this year and there'll be a party sometime later this year. I don't plan to go. My reasoning is that I'm got a lot of other things keeping me busy and when I'm not busy a lot of things I like to do a lot more than seeing people I haven't choosen to see in 20 years anyway.

20. I was wondering the same thing
My 20th is in July and I can't decide whether I want to go, mainly because I didn't really enjoy high school all that much. Maybe I'll change my mind once the date draws nearer but right now I feel pretty indifferent. If I miss it, meh.

see a pattern emerging here?

I'd like to send them a video message saying "If you ever see me back in that shithole town you'll know I fucked up real bad!"

24. everone I have ever talked to about this tells me
that 20 and up are the ones to go to. Everyone has so much life experience they just relax into the memories if that makes any sense. I say go. You can always leave early if you are having a bad time, but I bet you won't! I didn't go to any of mine, but am really looking forward to my 25th coming up this summer.

26. I put if off for 40 years. Now, I'm stoked for the next one.
I justified not going by saying I'm out of touch with everyone though one person kept in contact for a year before the last one and kept urging me. I grudgingly went since it's only a few miles from where my mom and aunt live and I had a great time reconnecting not only with a few old friends but in closing the books on other, previous friends. Very satisfying, I must say.
