Poll question: Best English Band - The Eighties
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 04:04 PM by Screaming Lord Byron
If you wanted Bananarama, then tough.

I took Madness out to put Duran Duran. Good idea? I much prefer Madness, myself.

9. Actually, PiL should be on there.
Love 'em or hate 'em, they were awfully influential. Or influentially awful?

But someone has to do them. So thank you. For what it's worth!

16. Second Edition (a.k.a. Metal Box) is one of my "Desert Island" records...
PiL were capable of dizzying greatness, but when they sucked, they sucked HARD!

42. Every song on Special Beat Service has the same bass line
Doo-doo doo doo doo DOO, doo doo-doo doo. (Repeat ad nauseaum)

I know this. I roomed next door to a gal that played that album 24 hours a day.

God curse the English Beat and their Special Beat Service.

24. And He Wasn't Raised In The States
I think Stewart was raised in Lebanon. I think his dad was in foreign service in the mideast. So, he spent an awful lot of his youth outside the states and college in England. So, it's sort of 2.75 British guys.

...most of their 80s catalogue is pretty flat in comparison.

25. Synchronicity is Flat?!?!?!?
Eeeeeeeepppppp! That was one of the greatest albums of the 80's. Adventerous musically, sonically and lyrically. The only reason why it wasn't anyone's album of the year is that it came out the same year as "Thriller". That stole everybody's thunder.

21. The Selector
Kind of obscure, having only an album or two, but in my book the best of the 'two tone' ska bands.

They are the type of band (ie., short-lived, but really good) whose work gets more famous with other musicians than with fans, but if you see a CD of their's somewhere, grab it. You won't be sorry.

38. I want to disqualify Joy Division...
Short Circuit: 1978

An Ideal for Living: 1978

Unknown Pleasures: 1979

Transmission/Novelty: 1979

Still LP recorded in 1979

The only Joy Division album recorded in the 1980s was "Closer", recorded in 1980.
