Explain Your DU Username!
I haven’t seen any “Explain Your Username” threads in a while.

A couple years ago, I was watching a rerun of “Home Improvement.” As you may know, Tim Allen’s character – the main character – was a host of a fictitious show called “Tool Time,” along with Al Borland (played by Richard Karn, who now hosts “Family Feud”).

On one episode of “Tool Time,” they were auctioning off classic cars for charity. To bid, Tim encouraged interested buyers to call 1-800-Z-CARZ-4-U (as in “The Car’s For You”).

One day a little while later, I thought, “You know, the DNC could use a good phone number like 1-800-I-H8-Z-GOP” (“I hate the GOP”).

It stuck, and I wanted to use it for my username on political discussion boards. However, I wanted a creative username that people would understand. I came up with ih8thegop. It’s basically my generic username all over the internet.

Then I found DU a year ago this past August, and the rest is history! :-)

3. Well...
I did have the username "Sting," but, my brother messed that name up and I can no longer access it. (don't ask, long story) Sting was my third favorite wrestler behind Stone Cold Steve Austin and Goldberg.

Now that I lost the "Sting" sn, I needed a new name. So I thought about badass names. I thought about vampires. They always have badass names. So I chose the sn "Blade."

Very badass.

I have a long history of serious mental illness. I have to take drugs to stay stable. Unfortunately stable does not mean happy and energetic. The stuff dulls the intellect and makes me feel tired a lot of the time.

Not the most inspiring of user names but it fits and I think the feeling comes through in my posts a lot of the time.

32. I've got a split personality...
There's this one. I've used that name on everything for quite a while. Sometimes I even sign letters home "jmowreader."

My evil twin cousin the OldSoldier (you know, the little mean guy who's in the 700 Club) is so named because of something a general once said to me. I was in Berlin during the year leading up to German reunification. After the reunification was complete, I talked to our security officer, got his approval, then took my squad to Wuensdorf, which is where the Group of Soviet Forces Germany was headquartered. "See Real Soviets In Their Natural Environment!" Afterward, I wrote a little travelogue of this dirty, nasty place and turned it in to the unit newspaper for publication. The colonel went batshit:

"We can't print something like this in the Sentinel! People will start going there!"

"Uhh...sir...the first sentence in this story was 'Don't go to Wuensdorf, it sucks there.'" And the rest of the story explained what a shitty place it was. You couldn't buy gas for your car in Wuensdorf. You couldn't buy groceries in Wuensdorf, or go out to eat. You couldn't buy anything in Wuensdorf...well, almost; there was a hardware store in Wuensdorf that had a hell of a lot of fifteen-inch-long grade-eight bolts and a little bit of everything else in stock. And the Soviets were restricted to their base, so you couldn't even see any Soviets in their natural environment without field glasses. We searched that whole damn town, which only took about 45 minutes, and found not one Soviet. Wuensdorf seemed to be a bedroom community for Zossen, which was a thriving village.

Anyway...fast forward to December 23, when the general in charge of my major command came to town. He wanted to go to Wuensdorf but didn't have the time. Uhhh...General, we know of a soldier who went to Wuensdorf and wrote a travelogue. So they summoned Sergeant Mowreader to bring forth his travelogue and present it to the General. Just before he went back to Virginia, the general wrote me a note: "It takes an old soldier to understand the historical significance of Wuensdorf."

40. And now.... Bertha Venation!
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 09:56 PM by Bertha Venation
My user name is taken from Harvey Fierstien's play "Torch Song Trilogy." It's the name of a drag queen. I started using it when the GLBT/friendly chorus I was with for seven years began listing the amount of its members' donations in each program. I thought that was ridiculous so I took a pseudonym: Bertha Venation. It was a joke for the benefit of our audience members, and became a topic of laughs at the lobby after-parties. No one in the chorus (save the treasurer) even knew who it was. (this paragraph c/p from a reply in the thread below)

When I joined DU, my handle was a source of consternation for at least one individual. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=118&topic_id=16832#16933
(This was my reply) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=118&topic_id=16832#17046

edit: for the curious, no, I'm not a drag queen. I'm a chapstick lesbian.

48. It's from an old joke
about how Canada got its name.

The Fathers of Confederation saw how well their neighbors to the south (that's you guys, in case you didn't know) had done with a three-letter acronym for a name. So, they decided to copy the idea for their own country. But what acronym to choose? Unable to agree on anything, they finally decided, in true Canadian fashion, to just pick three letters at random.

So they wrote all the letters of the alphabet on scraps of paper and tossed them into a hat, then hired a civil servant (this was before cutbacks) to pick three and read them off.

And so he did: "C, eh. N, eh. D, eh."

And thus CANADA was born.

51. A few factors
Much more than meets the eye. Crazy-fun. Quicksilver/Mercury. Secret knowlege. Hermes, protector of travellers and theives, trickster and guide over the river Styx. The next world is in the birthing process. Leaders with foresight can take us there. Hermes is the Greek Anubis. Dark and Light. Starts and ends with a "p". Judgement. Chance.

I am of the persuasion that we are at the start of a new chapter in human affairs. Exactly when this began is unclear, but selection 2000 and the subsequent 9.11 attacks and its reprocussions are sure signs that epochal weirdness is afoot.
