I love Hefeweizen too. My favorites are Maisel Waisse and Weihestephaner, although I can't get the Maisel Waisse locally anymore. The store that carried it dropped it. They do still carry the Weihestephaner, but man oh man is it expensive. $8.17 per six pack. :(

Salvator, made by Paulaner, is common in Augsburg. Optimator less so, but we did get Loewenbraeu's Doppelbock, Triumphator. Of course, comparing a Pils to a Doppelbock is comparing apples and pears.

I can get some specialty German beers here...like a brand of "kolsch", Tucher from Nuremberg, Bitburger, and also a beer from Bamberg. I even saw Berliner Kindl here once.

Yet some regional "big names" like Henninger, Licher, Binding, are not available here in the USA.

It, of course, depends on where one is, but, esp. in the south of Germany, they're usually easy to find.
