I'm so looking forward to meeting you!

In the meantime, c'mon, DU'ers of Chicago! You know you want to heckle me about my baseball team, my terrible sense of direction and the fact that this is the biggest city I've been to yet on my own! :scared:

Think of the fun we'll have!

12. I hate Chicago
I lived there for a year, which was a year too long. Rudest human beings on the planet. I always had this feeling that they were rude because they thought big city people were supposed to be, and they wanted to look like big city people.

And then there's the fact that my car was broken into FOUR TIMES. Four times in one year.

Yeah, a great place. If you like that sort of thing.

21. If Chicagoans are the best people in the world
the world is in serious trouble.

But what I liked about Chicago is the money I saved on tips at restaurants and other places. I absolutely DO NOT tip if the wait staff is rude to me or anyone else. So, I almost NEVER had to leave a tip in Chicago. It was like they were genetically incapable of being polite. More money for me!!

Especially Chicago's service industry. They'd appreciate you staying right where you are.

Strangely enough, I've spent a great deal of time in that lovely state whose flag you bear as your avatar. Amazing how when you travel the country, you discover that crime can happen to you anywhere and that people can act like little shits everywhere, without exception. Even Chicago. Even Iowa.

in one year. People in my neighborhood used to joke that "BMW" stood for "break my window". Which doesn't explain why my Ford Escort was so enticing. One was a "smash and grab" with me in the car! My resume went out the next day. And I was never again the victim of crime.

And I've never stiffed a server anywhere but Chicago. I normally tip at 20-25%. But if you throw the food at the table, speak brusquely and don't have time to refill my cup, I get to keep the tip. See how that works?

That way, they just open the door. It's easier than replacing windows...over and over and over....

If you must visit a city, Boston's nice. They could give Chicagoans lessons in etiquette. Five years in Boston, one in Chicago. Boston's better.

and twice in the last year, my wife has left her purse on the front seat, overnight, with the car unlocked, and the window rolled down...no problems.

and if you'd had bad luck with servers in chicago- it can only be because they picked up pretty quickly on your personality...you gotta GIVE respect to get it.

but ya know, i have never had anything happen to my person, or to my kids. 25 years, and i can count on one hand the number of assholes that i have had to deal with. or the number of bad food servers i have had for that matter.

61. I moved to Iowa, was there for 5 years, then made the mistake
of returning to the land of subdivisions and political corruption...and car break-ins. And I don't live in a subdivision, I live in a 130 year old house in the older part of the city. And I'm committed to staying here no more than 4 years, then returning to a civilized place. With open space and caucuses.

The really funny thing is that when people from the new subdivisions come down here to go to the movies or the Y or whatever, they ALWAYS turn on their car alarms. They're worried about their cars being broken into or stolen here. I guess they assume they brought Chicago's problems with them.

68. Love, love Chicago
Go there whenever I can.

A Brit journalist (not Hitch, thank God) assigned to the U.S. for many years said he considered Chicago the unofficial U.S. capitol because it is so American in so many ways.

The DUer complaining so loudly about Chicago must walk around in his own bubble. I lived on the East Coast, got broken into a number of times, but am still willing to acknowledge the good things about the places where I lived. Good and bad people everywhere, good and bad experiences everywhere. Met some Brits not long ago who came to Chicago to have a look at the architecture; city's got a great reputation.
