A question about eHarmony commercials
Is it just me, or do all of the couples you see on eHarmony commercials look enough alike to be brother and sister? Am I the only one creeped out by that? Or, do I just have way too much time on my hands to be pondering such a trivial thing?

Just wonderin'?

1. Well, all applicants must pass an entry exam...
You might be onto something. Seriously. :D

3. If I remember correctly
eHarmony was included in an article I read about scam setup places. I can't remember all of the details, but it was outrageous what they would do to sucker people into sending them more money.

4. I'd like to read that article.
That would really suck to play on people's emotions like that.

Welcome to DU! :)

6. Thanks
It was on Yahoo news sometime in the last month or so. It listed about 3 of the agencies that were big enough that I had heard of them. Apparently one of the things they would do if your membership was about to expire was to send in a ringer, for lack of a better term. In other words, if you were a guy looking for a tall blonde they would hire a tall blonde to go out with you and lead you on until you re-upped your membership. Cold hearted if you ask me.

9. Match is the same way.
I had a profile with them. Rarely anyone would reply, which had me wondering if they were running abnadoned profiles or shuffling them between cities. Some actually brought a law suit against them, when he saw the same profile listed in differrent cities. Anyway, when they decided you had to pay in order to respond to someone's message to you, I suddenly received a goffy message the very next day. Yahoo's the same way.

Nerve and OK Cupid seem legit...at the moment.

14. I once belonged to a dating service - I was 24, so it must've been 1990.
I "won" a free three-month membership while at a bar. The local radio DJ did a little show at this bar every Saturday night, and because she was a friend of mine, I often went with her. This particular night, a representative of the dating service was there, encouraging people to sign up to win the membership. Imagine my surprise when I won! (It later turned out to be rigged - my friend said the guy admitted it to her. There were several "winners" - all of whom were young women.)

Anyway. I accepted the free three-month membership, made a video, submitted photos, and completed a profile. What a joke that was - nobody EVER read the profile, it seemed. They just looked at the pictures and chose people that way. I got "I want to meet you" postcards from dozens of men and went on dates with a few. Every single one of them had indicated that they DID NOT want to date a woman with children. I had a 3-year-old daughter. I specified in my profile that I was a single mother. They didn't read the freaking profile!

The only person I met at the dating service that turned out to be compatible with me, and who eventually became a good friend of mine, was someone I met in the elevator!

Apparently, they did this "winning a membership" scam every once in a while so they could truthfully tell the men who signed up that they had lots of young women members.

7. The thing I noticed....
Is that they never have *any* interracial couples. Um, hello? Melting pot, what? *sigh*

11. I'm on the site and they have matched me up with some black men.
So they do put together interracial couples. Unfortunately, I've never met anyone through that site yet; most of them live in other states and such.

13. Having gone through their "screening" test (and gotten no matches, altho
they kept trying to make me pay anyway), I'd say that non-descript and extremely conventional people would get lots of matches.

15. no gay matching
My friend Carolyn, sitting on the couch next to me, was going to try eHarmony last year. Then she learned that eHarmony refuses to match same sex couples because of the founder's religious beliefs.

(I haven't verified this myself, but she vouches for it, and that's why she decided not to think about eHarmony anymore)
