I just got push-polled...
by a freaking computer, I might add.

"This is Cammie," the computer voice said. No, you are a computer.

The poll was on children's entertainment - ratings regulations getting more and more relaxed while shows aimed at youth are getting edgier.

"Many parents feel powerless to do anything other than strict monitoring of their children's entertainment," chirped Cammie. "Do you feel the same way?"

Uh, listen Computer Cammie: I have NO PROBLEM monitoring my own children's access to TV shows and other entertainment! I don't need some watchdog group doing it for me.

The poll was done by the Dove Foundation:

1. And if you've ever been push-polled by a computer,
you know just how painful that can be!

Old Letterman joke.

2. Oh no! Parents actually might have to monitor their own children's
viewing habits instead of the government sanitizing things for the entire nation ? But then parents wouldn't be able to let the TV babysit their kids for hours while the parents do their own thing. :sarcasm:

4. "What kind of content bothers you the most?"

There is a choice for, I kid not--ALL.

http://www.dove.org/Frames.asp?URL=surveys/take_our_survey.htm

I can speak with some authority on this--this site is hooked up with "Family Friendly Entertainment," the comapny that takes even PG rated (even some G rated) films and edits them even further.

You can only buy their material on their site.

5. ugh.
I HATE that. You're savvy enough to know what their intent was, but so many others wouldn't be.

Grrrr....

6. You, too, can make a valuable contribution to furthering the editing
of G-rated movies--take the survey yourself, DU!

10. Check THIS out...
"70% said that the amount of sex, violence and profanity in films bothers them."

As I reacall, it asked what bothered me most, nudity, profanity, violence. Is it me, or is the "result" misleading?

Their polls are designed to skew the results.

12. How I love the hypocrites...
The same groups that "HATE Hollywood" love to name-drop every C-level former actor on their "Advisory Board" and proudly proclaim "See? They love us!"

9. What a confusing question...
"...powerless...strict monitoring..."

I'm not entirely sure I understand what they're trying to say with it in print - there's no way I'd be able to answer it just by hearing it. I guess they just want you to agree with the "many"...

15. They want you to say that you are disturbed at programming
aimed at children/families, and that you DO feel "powerless" to do anything about it, so they can lobby for stricter governmental controls of programming and rating systems.

However, we are not powerless. As a parent, I'm perfectly capable of deciding what is and is not acceptable for my children to watch/see, and I'm perfectly capable of monitoring their viewing habits as I see fit. What I do NOT want is for some watchdog group and/or the government to decide for me what is appropriate or inappropriate for my children. In other words, I'm exactly the type of respondent the Dove Foundation did NOT want.

11. I had the same recording last week! From the same company
I screwed them up, I think ;)

Recording- "May I speak to the lady of the house?"

Me (not realizing yet that it was a recording- "No 'lady of the house here', just me"

Recording- "May I speak to the man of the house?"

Me (getting tiffed and realizing this is a computer-poll)- "Again, it's just me. Unless you want to talk to my dog. Should I put Rex on?"

CLICK! (They hung up)

They called back two days later- this time, I let the computer get to the questions. The first one was the same as you described above. Realizing "what it was", I went into a rant about how parental responsibility was the answer to the problem, and how I didn't believe in censorship. Knowing as soon as I stopped it would "go on to the next question", I went on and didn't stop for a good 2 minutes, giving the same answer but mostly blabbering, seeing how long I could keep going on the same answer.

After about 2 minutes, the machine hung up- and they haven't called back. Awwwww.....
