GAAAHHH!! It's pronounced "ro-baht" not "ro-butt!"

So I was just talking to my mom on my cell and she asked me what the background noise is and I said "Dad's watching 'I,Robot'" and she goes "Is that the movie with Will Smith and all them ro-butts?"

Gaaahhh!! She has always pronounced it that way and it drives me nuts!

Even after I corrected her she still pronounces it "ro-butt."

She is totally hopeless.

The word was coined by Karel Cepek in 1920 in the play "Rossum's Universal Robots", and was taken from the Czeck root rabota meaning forced work or drudgery.

The pronunciation of rabota is almost exactly like it looks: short a, long o. Technically, the word robot should be pronounced "rah-boat". "Ro-butt" is probably closer to the original.

It could also be the fact that my mom grew up in a generation that was heavy on sci-fi and that is probably how they pronounced it then.
