1. Depends on your situation...
Ordinarily I'd suggest staying until something better comes along; but if you're really burned out or being seriously taken advantage of, you ought to quit before it does psychological damage.

2. Which means I should start looking for something new quite soon.
Not taken advantage of... though I have inferred I may not have a job in a few months. It's hard to tell right now but there is no loyalty and if they want to get rid of good people, so be it. But they have commended my technical skills... Yet I don't get to do anything new or get training. Of course I'm confused, lacking direction.

But without the job, I have nothing.

The logical thing to do is prolong life while I can and live up to standards.

3. Maybe some career counseling would help...
It might give you a sense of direction anyway...
I'm sorry your job sucks!

4. Thanks, I shall pursue it...
Besides, my job is the only thing that sucks right now... :(

Forgive me, my juvenile sense of levity - I grew up watching too much FOX television...

5. At the point where you say "I quit."
It gets a lot easier from there.

6. I waited for them to toss me
The bad news was it was stressful, the good news I got severance and should get unemployment. I'm not sure it was worth waiting though.

9. When you have something new lined up.

Or when you have enough saved up to live on for a few months while you look for something else.
It's difficult and it sucks but look around for something else and hang in there. If you get "lucky" you'll get laid off or fired so at least then you'll get severance/unemployment, but really, if you can't stand it look for something else and be persistent.

I know how you feel-or I can empathize at least. I finally have my last day at a job I don't like on Friday but it's taken me a year of looking--and about 6 months working a second part time job--to finally be able to quit. (The part time offered me full, which is what I wanted when I first applied for it but they didn't have a spot open at the time.) And believe me, there were plenty of times I was a hair away from saying "fuck it" and walking off the job, but then I'd be broke and on the streets in no time.

Anyway, here's my point: Look for a new job. Look in every newspaper, online search, and company website you can find. Don't limit yourself either. You might think you only have one specific skill set, but chances are if you do a little "self-assessment" of what you've done in your current job and what you've learned from being there you might see some other qualities that you wouldn't think of right off the bat and that could translate into a wider range of new job possibilities. Don't be discouraged if you don't fit a job description exactly either. Send your resume in anyway if you think you'd still be a pretty strong candidate despite say, one little thing, because maybe the person doing the hiring will see all you can do and maybe he/she would be willing to train you on that thing.

Good luck, Hypno. I hope you find a way to something better soon. Being stuck in a place that makes you nuts is no fun.
