Chef Gets Big Send-Off on 'South Park' By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
2 hours, 43 minutes ago

NEW YORK - Isaac Hayes' Chef character got a true "South Park" send-off Wednesday night — seemingly killed off but mourned as a jolly old guy whose brains were scrambled by the "Super Adventure Club."

The thinly disguised satire continued the show's feud with Scientologists in its 10th season premiere on Comedy Central.

The soul singer has voiced the Chef character in "South Park" since 1997, but left recently because of what he called the animated show's religious "intolerance and bigotry." Founders Matt Stone and Trey Parker said Hayes, a Scientologist, was mad that "South Park" mocked the religion in an episode last November.

A rerun of that Scientology episode was mysteriously pulled off the air last week amid published reports that actor Tom Cruise, another Scientologist, had used his clout to bury it. A Cruise spokesman denied that.\

1. Talk about literally burning the bridge!

Yet they left the door open for Hayes to return. All he has to do is quit that "fruity little club" and they'll figure out a way to get him out of that Darth Chef suit.

"We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us. We should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains."

2. ...I'm still in shock he's a member of that fruity, little club.
I had no idea Isaac Hayes is a scientologist.

3. A genuinely wicked satire on Chef's exodus.
There is something seriously wrong with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but they always hit the nail on the head, over and over again.

4. It was brutal..
wasn't it? It wasn't enough to have him fall into the canyon, hitting boulders and sharp rocks on the way down. They had to have his body pierced, legs chewed off by the mountain lion and face ripped apart by the lion and bear.

So violent.

5. You left out the burning which was first
and the shooting. Those Super Adventure Club guys aren't very good with a rifle.

Yet, he is now, DARTH CHEF!

The bouncing into the canyon has to be an homage to the Simpsons. And a nice reference back to the Walmart episode regarding pooping your pants when you expire.

(South Park works on all levels.)

Stan's eulogy: "A lot of us don't agree with the choices the Chef has made in the last few days. Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us. But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile. We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us. We should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains."

9. but it all happened because he chose to leave
once he crossed the bridge and chose his "fruity little club" over his friends, everything bad finally happened to him.

10. I had a hard time with the DVD commentary where they fed bacon to a pig...
...on an "all-bacon" cooking show. For better or worse, they take things to the limit, and keep pushing. There are days where I enjoy South Park and days where I don't wanna know it exists.

17. I hear you--
I feel the same way. I've not really enjoyed South Park in quite a while. It Jumped the Shark for me a while ago. LOL! Just wasn't a smart or funny, just kind of meanspirited and preachy.

6. Bigger article here - Chef is now a pedophile... South Park's Revenge...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4836286.stm

South Park gets revenge on Chef
South Park
Isaac Hayes did not participate in the new episode
South Park has exacted revenge on its former star Isaac Hayes by turning his character Chef into a paedophile and seemingly killing him off.

The opening episode of the 10th series, screened in the US on Wednesday, appeared to be a satire on Scientology.

Hayes, a Scientologist, quit the animated comedy after a different episode ridiculed the religion.

In the new show, Chef is brainwashed by the "Super Adventure Club" - thought to be a veiled reference to Scientology.

The other characters are angry at "that fruity little club for scrambling his brains".

(SNIP)

'Hurt and confused'

At his funeral, one of the children says: "A lot of us don't agree with the choices the Chef has made in the last few days.

"Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us.

"But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile."

Article has quite a bit more.

7. This was the best episode ever.
Edited on Thu Mar-23-06 07:42 AM by IsIt1984Yet
Trey and Matt at their absolute best and "worst". They genuinely showed their affection and appreciation for Isaac while taking the most heinous pot-shots at Scientology.

I found it brilliant and moving.

I wept.

11. Killed the fuckout of him didn't they?
Fire, falling down a mountain, attacked by a mountain lion, shot, attacked by a bear, then crapping out a humongous turd, yet, they left the door open for him to come back from that fruity little club.

13. Literally and figuratively tore him apart.
Splicing audio bits and finally dismembering poor Chef.

I larfed my arse off.

There's a little piece of Chef in all of us.

15. He'll be back
Like they did with Bobby on Dallas and on most daytime soap operas. Bringing dead people back to life after six months or so. The kids will all wake up one day after all having the same dream about "Chef".

I didn't see the show.

20. Agreed--
I haven't cared for many of the newer episodes. The only one that made me laugh (a little) was the Ginger episode. Other than that, they've been a bit heavy handed (imo) of late...

I merely tuned in to see how they would handle Chef's leaving.

22. I thought the equation of Scientology w/ child molestation...
...was overblown, dishonest and a bit perplexing. But the send-off speech was beautiful.

23. I agree--
The send off speech was quite nice. But I disliked the equation of Scientology and Chef to child molestation. For me the episode felt like it was thrown together--I could be wrong about that of course.

24. It was a big turn off for me.
Isaac Hayes isn't a child molester and the Church of Scientology isn't hit with any molestation scandals either. They could have done a lot better by sticking to more relevant themes. I changed the channel after 20 minutes into it.

26. I understand.
it was difficult not to turn--but I wanted to see how they treated the departure.

I felt the same way about the other scientology episode, with Tom Cruise in the closet. But I did turn that one off.

I turned the channel on their Katrina episode... :eyes:

.. is always overblown and often dishonest. Why the surprise :)

But I'm looking forward to seeing it for the first time in years. Scientology is much worse than a fruity little club :)
