Everyone say thank you to Mrs R, please. Without her, I might not be
here tonight. I mean here on DU, functioning normally (or as normally as I ever do).

I lost my fucking mind last night. I mean just COMPLETELY lost my grip, my marbles, however you want to put it, I couldn't find it. Or them. Didn't even know they were gone, actually. But I was gone, that's for sure. I moved out and the bats took up residence in the ol' belfry for a while. And why wouldn't they? There was plenty of empty space up there.

But she yanked me out of it. I was going dissociative and probably would have found myself in Ohio or someplace this morning if she hadn't yanked me out of it. And her with no professional training. What a woman.

No, I did not get violent or loud or abusive, just stark staring, as the wonderful Brit expression puts it; see above.

I was fine this morning. Am fine still. Only thanks to Mrs R.

9. Oh, she is amazing. She told me that she was terrified (not afraid of me,
just that "she could see me going away") and was planning to call one of the policemen who live in the neighborhood for help, but fortunately didn't have to. I owe her big.

I couldn't keep myself in my own skin last night, so don't count on me being much of an anchor.

But thanks for the nice words.

14. I think I'm all right. I talked to my shrink today, and he said that
fugue states are generally not recurrent, even though I've had milder versions of them before.

I just have to watch for the next Pain Crisis, because that's what probably triggered it. But instead of ladling in the emergency Demerol and telling Mrs R I needed her to pitch me into the hydrotherapy tub, I decided I was going to be a Tough Guy and not bother her. Bad idea.

I'm not going to make that mistake again. I, of all people, should know how nutso pain can make you get.

Thanks for your concern and advice.

18. I can't. Seriously. I don't know how.
My parents thought there was something wrong with me (gee, really?) because I stopped crying when I was about three. Just like that. And never have since.

I lock up instead. There's probably some kind of complex psychological explanation, but what would be the point of knowing what it is?

We are what we end up being.

Thirty-eight dollar Zuppa d' Pesce at the high-end Italian place in town? Done.

Finest wine from our special reserve with that, Madam R? Done.

Bribe the kid who does the sitting for our little guy to stay for a couple of extra hours? Priceless.

I joke now, but I really was that close. Fuck me, it was; I could feel it happening.

We'll see how things shake out. As I said, my shrink thinks I'll be OK as long as I don't push my luck when the next Pain Crisis hits (and it will).

I've never been afraid of anything in my life (not saying that's a good thing, because I know it's not), but I have to say that some of the things I remember from last night, well...give me pause.

I'm damn lucky I didn't end up in the hospital. Or in Wisconsin. That was close to happening.
