3. They're really expensive
Crowns are insanely so. Not having any experience with this in the past two years (since my husband had surgery last) I'd say it sounds about right. Expensive. But better than losing your teeth, I guess.

12. the dentist didn't show me the x-rays
just said I needed it and charged me $110 for the visit and 2 x-rays. The mollar was chipped (on one side) and I can feel that it goes under the gum (touching it with my toungue) but I'm a little paranoid. Barely any sensitivity and no pain.

17. sounds fishy to me
Our dentist in Tijuana shows us the X-rays and also shows everything in a mirror that is to be done. I don't like how some U.S. dentists would just come and tell you something is to be done and here's the price without offering any proof.

20. all my other dentists did that too
but now I can't go back and say "can I see the x-ray?". I was too stupid not to say let me see it. Usually they put it in the light board without asking. I didn't get the good vibes from this dentist.

But also I don't feel like spending another $100 or more to get a second opinion.

19. A chipped molar can be bad
But I would ask to see the x-rays nonetheless. It's your mouth and your money, after all, they have no right to keep anything from you. Have them show you why you need the root canal, especially.

Unless he's your sister's roomate's brother's uncle or something. That is the problem in my little town no one will report the quack (including myself)because they have a personal connection.

38. If all you have is a chip, it's suspect that you'd need a root canal
I had a chip, and all we had to do is put on a crown. Unless it's been chipped for a long time, or if in the chipping, it chipped down through the crown into the nerve area and is leaving it exposed, which could be the case.

I'd certainly ask the dentist about it, though. A chipped tooth is not ipso facto root canal needing.

42. I just looked at it
it's about 1/10 of the tooth gone in one side. Black space and it feels pretty deep. If he just puts the crown, what would happen to the tooth? Wouldn't it get infected?

46. If the crack from the chip goes into the nerve area,
then - and I'm saying this as one who is not a dentist - I'd assume you would indeed need a root canal, just to go ahead and kill the tooth now before capping, becuase if the nerve area is exposed, more than likely eventually something will get in there and cause an infection and kill the tooth and then you'd have a real damnable problem. So, better safe than sorry.

But, of course, you'd need a dentist to tell you that.

And that might very well be what the problem is.

10. Last root Canel I had cost me $500 dollars
And the price varied depending on which tooth he wanted to do the root canel on (Several of my teeth just went bad, no cavity, just abscensed).
The back ones were more expensive than the front.

As to caps, in the early 1980s I had a Bridge put in my front upper teeth, cost me $2000 and took 18 months to do (Thank God I had Dental insurance than).

14. That's high
I just paid $608 for a root canal last week. Haven't had the crown done yet, but I believe that's around $300, if I recall correctly. Mine is done by my regular dentist though. If you go to an endodontist (specialist in root canal work) it will usually cost considerably more.

I could be wrong about the price of the crown, though. It's been a long time since I've had a restoration done, but I seem to remember it cost about half what the actual root canal cost. I'm having the restoration for this tooth done next week so I guess I'll soon find out.

That isn't even close to reasonable. A close friend is having all of his teeth crowned in Tijuana for $8,000. I just got a note from someone else who is having it done in Costa Rica. You may need to shop around.

These are porcelain over metal crowns -- high quality crowns.

I forget which school my Mexican dentist went to but one of the Costa Rican dentists we interviewed went to the LSU School of Dentistry here in south Louisiana.

I'm not clear that their costs are that much lower. I just think they are not trying to have one person pay their green fees and their new Lexus.

16. Sounds about right.
$800 for a root canal here, and tack on another 1200 for the crown. unless you don't mind stainless steel, then it's only $500...

I had a lower partial made 4 years ago with 5 teeth on it that was over $600, and it's a cheap-assed ill-fitting one, too.

30. Hubby was told he needed $11,000 in dental work
actually it was about 12,500 but insurance would cover 1,500 (what a godsend). he had braces for too many years as a child, which weakened the enamel on his teeth. couple that with too many years drinking nothing but pop and eating lots of garbage and you have some pretty messed up teeth.

what prompted that visit was a toothache he had earlier this year; the tooth became infected. after taking antibiotics and getting that estimate from the doctors office, he never went back to them. obviously, we don't have 11,000 dollars lying around so they gave him information about a capital one credit plan (a rather high interest loan). i think we'll be shopping around for a second opinion.

on a similar note to your problem, my father was told he needed a root canal and given a price. my father told them to just pull it (his tooth was in the back and you can't tell it's missing).

Good luck with your tooth!!

:hi:

34. Absolutely not
They should be cascading the costs rather than separating them and I have never paid more than 700 even for gold and porcelain crowns. The root canal has to be prepped for a crown regardless and the actual crown itself only COSTS approximately 3-400.

Rahter than get a second opinion..negotitate with them...bet they'll work with you. especially if you are paying cash.

39. NO. If you don't have dental insurance, go to a dental college for a
fraction of the price and top, TOP quality.

That's ridiculous. There is no reason on the planet for that crap to be that expensive. It's all PROFIT.

BTW, FYI, you can get a steel colored, standard crown for $20. That's TWENTY DOLLARS.

I had a root canal done a couple months ago, had the whole custom fitting for the crown thing, right? Took forever. Then weeks to make the custom crown, right?

The temp fell off. Just popped right off, and I chomped on it, breaking it. (Ouch) So it's Saturday, I'm across town, I see a dentist open sign, pop on in. Guy had just opened his practice, and lo and behold, he has these nice little steel type metal crowns that just pop right on. Lasted for 6 weeks while I waited my my custom deal. Didn't give me one IOTA of trouble at all.

It's robbery I tell ya, robbery. Shop around. That's a ridiculous price.

And this is with THREE different dentists!! I inherited very bad teeth, it's not my fault.
