Avatar help, please
I posted in the computer group and it was suggested that I post here. I am a novice and even though I tried to search for help in current and archives postings, I can't find a "how to". I would like to resize a photo I have in "my pictures" and use it as an Avatar. I'm lost. I keep getting error messages. Following the directions in "edit my profile" is not cutting it for me. This old granny is not too savvy. A little computer knowledge is a dangerous thing.... Thanks to you all.

1. Post the photo, and I'll bring it down to avatar size for you.
Then, when I post it, you can just save it to your desktop.

When you get ready to upload it to DU, be sure that you select the right format, gif or jpeg.

4. I tried to follow the original directions and when I did so, the
following appeared: "To upload your avatar, add the following to your avatar box." It then gave me a letter/symbol/number sequence to enter and I did so. Is this where I am screwing up? If not, how do I post a photo that is in "my pictures"? (You must be getting a chuckle out of this.) How dumb can I be?

5. You had everything correct up to the point that you copied the code...
to move it into the avatar box.

Copy that file name (all those letters and numbers) and put them little avatar window.

Be sure to scroll down and "save changes" before you exit that page.

Try it again, and see if it works.

2. Post what you want to resize
It'd be easier for one of us to do it than type up an explanation. :)

3. I haven't been able to upload my own, even though I have properly
sized files--it just won't let me. I finally gave up trying...

6. Avatar help? Everyone was great with help for me, did you
forget to temporarily disable pop-up blocker? And my big error, after the size problem was addressed. When I typed the assigned word/number sequence it in the Avatar box, I typed the whole thing...as in:
personal/XXXXX.
well, it should have been the word personal/xxxx.jpg then to the bottom to save it. Your image may be gif, in which case you would obviously use that. I think there needs to be a better, printable guide to adding your own avatar. I've tried for a year. Good luck. You could always ask someone in the Lounge for help, they were great to me.
