Hacking Cough
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 05:14 PM by DanCa
Hey all does anyone have any good advice on how to handle a horrible hacking cough. My fever's breaking but ever time I cough my side hurts and trying to sleep is a pain in the dumpa. Thanks all Danny.

4. Will do thanks
How did you handle sleeping? I'd kill for a decent nights sleep.

10. Nyquil
it puts you right out, and I kept a bag of lozenges nearby incase my coughing woke me up

a fan nearby drowned out the noise of my wheezing

2. I am loath to seek help from a doctor, but you might be wise to do that
there are some REALLY mean bugs out there and you could get worse in a hurry.

Go to the doctor

6. Steamy shower just before bedtime can loosen things up
also, when you get the coughing spasms, grab for a fairly wet HOT washcloth and cough into/through ut.. The warm moist air taken in does help.. My grandmother used to put VICKS on a washcloth, dunk it it hot water and fold it for us to breathe into..:)

8. Yep, the Vicks Vaporub or Mentholatum both work
especially coupled with the nice hot washcloth. Your grandmother was wise. Mine did the same and taught the trick to me. I sure miss my granny.

9. Why we never bought mentholatum.. It's gross but funny
My son had a stuffed up nose, so I put mentholatum in his little nose.. About 3 am, he awoke shrieking.. I ran to his room to see what happened.. Our little poodle, Gidget, who slept with him, apparently LOVED mentholatum.. She woke him up by sticking her tongue in his nostrils trying to get to the mentholatum.. Vicks must not have agreed with her..so we used that from then on :)

11. LOL.
I bet that was a scary sensation while sleeping. I mean when you are asleep, you don't know what is licking your nose. I have to watch my cats with the mentholatum. Sunday Girl, my oldest just loves to smell it and tries to lick it too. The other two hate it. They squint their eyes like it burns or something. :)

5. I have a home remedy.
It involves food and mentolatum. Rub mentolatum on your chest really good. Get a washcloth and run the hottest water your hands can handle on it. Place the washcloth on your chest and just lay there a while.

After a while the nose piercing smell of the mentholatum will let up. That's when you want to get a clove of garlic, an onion, and a few potatoes. Chop, dice and smash accordingly, then stew in some margarine and some salt until the smell overwhelms you. When that happens, eat some taters, onions, and garlic.

Works for me.
Hope it does for you too.
If it does,
Enjoy.

Please do not seek medical advice at DU. You can never tell if a poster is setting you up for organ harvest to complete his grandfather's work.
