Granted, a certain amount of intellectual lassitude is required of the audience. "It wasn't a political statement," he says in answer to the Big Why. "I don't really know why I did it. It's like riding fast on a motorbike. It was just a dream that I had one day and I did it."

Even when he's kidding he still sounds a little touched. "Derren Brown is a great guy but I did say to him, 'Why don't you use a real gun and a real bullet and just fire it at your hand so that you have a one in six chance of getting your hand blown off but you don't die?'"
