AP Stylebook update: 'gay'
An AP Stylebook entry has been updated:

Editor's Note: This style change affects entries on lesbian, lesbianism
(deleted), as well as sex changes, transgender and transsexuals.

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-

gay

Used to describe men and women attracted to the same sex, though lesbian is
the more common term for women. Preferred over homosexual except in clinical
contexts or references to sexual activity. Include sexual orientation only when
it is pertinent to a story, and avoid references to \"sexual preference\" or to
a gay or alternative \"lifestyle.\"

1. You had to know it was inevitable,
I'm surprised it's taken this long, actually.

5. My thoughts exactly
You know as well as I do that AP is often way behind the rest of the kids. There was one they changed just last year, or the year before, that pretty much every paper in the country had long since changed on their own.

The word? "Fundraiser." No more hyphen. :eyes:

2. Does it still mean "happy," too?
Or is that too 19th century?

3. Nah...
When my kids first started to come home and say things like, "He's so gay," or "God, you're gay," I used to smile sweetly and comment on how nice it was of them to notice their sibling's cheerful demeanor.

I got 'eyerolled', but...hey...it's a legitimate definition.

4. So whenever you have yourself a merry little Christmas,
we're promoting an anti-Talibornigan Christian agenda?
Sweet. :)
