Wow. This is kind of disturbing
ANYONE can get a yahoo map to your home just by googling your full name, city and State. I did it and mine came up along w/my telephone #'s. The map to my home in the middle of nowhere really freaked me out though.

Try it. I did several friends and family members and got maps for all but a couple of them. Is it me or does this seem a little more then scary to you?

1. Yeah, Freaky!!! Thank goodness I rent and move like every 10 months
Or I'd probably be on one of those lists....

Information is a dangerous thing, especially in the wrong hands.

2. It sucks, yes... but it's also part of the public record
and I'm not sure there's any way to stop it short of having an unlisted number and refusing to provide your home address to anyone who may put you on a mailing list.

I was thinking of something slightly different.

This didn't actually work for me though.

4. Well, it's all public domain stuff
it's just that the internet makes it easier to put together all those maps and all those phonebooks.

It is a bit scary, yes.

Welcome to the information age.

The convenience of getting a map to wherever you want to go has the price of anyone else being able to go to where you are.

Not saying anything against you. Just offering the truth, which I'm not sure to do with.

5. This has always been the case for anyone with a published phone #
It's just a lot easier now. You don't have to drag out the phone book and a paper map. I don't understand the fuss. If you are concerned get an unlisted phone number and don't give out your address.

6. I have been temporarily working as a national long distance
directory assistance operator, night shift. From 4-8pm people call pizza joints and clubs/lounges. 8-10pm drunk people call looking for the next club or their ex-spouses. 10-12 people start calling police, bail bondsmen, towing services and hospitals. 12-2am weird crazy people who sound like stalkers call requesting the number that goes with the apartment they can see. It is frightening. This is an exageration, but people do start looking for the long lost loved ones and other strange requests late at night, creepy sounding people along with the regular characters. It got me to thinking we need to not have our addresses listed with our phone numbers. It is easy request from the phone company.

12. It gets better
If you have posted your name and your basic wherabouts or hometown on DU, your number is listed and you have given very general information about yourself, anyone who reads this site CAN find you.

It really isn't that hard.

Not meant to instill paranoia, just to make people who MAY wish to be anonymous aware.
