the draft
Looks like the admin is spreading the troops out real thin and keeping them in extended tours, so as to create a disgruntled military.

I suspect the draft will be reimplemented very soon.

IMHO

anybody else think so too?

1. Only if * is elected in 2004
Karl Rove does not dare to offend those suburbanite, SUV driving "security" moms in Macomb County, Michigan until after * does not have to worry about facing the voters ever again.

2. I agree.. this is why Charlie Rangel..
...brought up the subject of the Draft before the war. It raises the spectre of wealthy Republicans having their own sons or daughters involved in a messy war instead of just working/middle class families. It’s easy to support a war when virtually no one you know is involved, esp. at the infantry level.

3. I don't think it very likely that the sons and daughters of wealthy
republicans will ever find themselves in that position, regardless of who is in the White House. Look at history, it's always the middle and lower classes that provide the cannon fodder.

4. Charlie knew but was making a good point...
It was an effective way to bring up the class issue before the war.

5. No exemption because of college this time, though.
Maybe they can get positions in the nat guard like bush did, but they won't be exempted because of college.

A draftee will be able to finish his semester, then off he goes.

11. Then off he/she goes
I think if the draft is reinstated it would only happen if Shrub is re-selected. But if college deferments are taken away and females are drafted too--as they should be, the country will feel much less gung-ho about war.

10. Just LET Bush enact the draft...
and watch the chickenhawk freepers from FreeRep leave that board and come to DU to protest...

IT is easy to be a hawk when you are young and have never seen your friends and classmates shipped off to war to die. (People in the 18-25 are just now getting a taste of it with this war.)

It is easy to be an adherent to conservative philosophy and a rabid admirer of the chimp in chief, until you have to leave to go fight in his war. THEN, when your own balls are in the balance and you really have a dog in the fight, can you decide whom you support.

In other words, I bet when it gets down to the nutcutting, there will be a lot of Freepers reconsidering their previously unaffirmed conservatism.

We'll see.

19. Let Bush enact the draft...
...and send hundrds of thousands of kids who never even thought of enlisting to die in his wars, just so that some conservatives will ditch the GOP. Yep, sending people to die for political causes is fien and dandy when the Democrats do it.

12. Thay'll HAVE to.................
as I stated in another post yesterday, the number of soldiers reenlisting after their tours are over will begin dropping like a rock. Add to that the dwindling number of people enlisting because of Bush's policies and you've a very depleted armed forces. In order to fulfill the dreams of PNAC the draft will be reinstituted; only after the next election of course.

13. We Already Have a Draft!
We have an economic draft. Unskilled and moderately skilled people economically forced to join the military because of the lack of employment opportunity in the civilian sector.

15. Good point!
I've thought about this myself. So if you thought of it, and I thought of it, we can be sure that someone in Washington has also thought of it.

But would our wonderful administration ever think of anything so devious? They are, afterall, men of high moral standards and character, right?
