48. Not true.
I have observed three varieties of lawyer in court.

-SHARKS: competent and aggressive, quick out of the gate. They bill a lot and often run out of steam in the face of stubbornness over time unless they get a quick victory wich happens.

-TIN HORNS: they are aggressive like sharks but less determined or competent. An opponent who sticks to his guns will stare down a tin horn.

-NICE GUYS: competent and well connected, these are the most dangerous opponents. They disarm their opponents with honest statements of fact and sincerity. They know their stuff, they know that they know it and they know that the opponent knows it. The court and even opposing counsel implicitly trust them.

182. Almost ALWAYS worth doing, but don't expect earthly reward
We used to help out a single friend who had breast cancer which had metastasized. She was a great person, and being there for her was VERY spiritually rewarding.

But she asked us to adopt her 6-year-old daughter, and we weren't in a financial position to do so at the time. We took care of the little demon child until other arrangements could be made (our friend had 7 siblings, so it wasn't as if it was us or foster care).

It was a very traumatic experience.

The child had NEVER been told "no" in 6 years, never been disciplined, and never been made to do anything she didn't want to do. She regularly pitched fits in public, kicking at screaming, she argued constantly with everything we said to her, she hated every food put in front of her, was constantly in trouble at school, and fought hard against the activities her mom had signed her up for (ballet, art), etc.

Yes, we understood why. Yes, she was getting TONS of counseling. And yes, we loved her anyway, in spite of the time she put water on the stairs in an attempt to get me to fall down them, and the time she told the new after-school monitor that she had no idea who my S.O. was and why he was trying to get her into his car (fortunately several of the other monitors there knew him, and had NO PROBLEM with him putting her under his arm like a sack of potatoes and carrying her out when she refused to leave) Oh, and the time she hurled a huge stuffed animal she was supposed to present as a gift to the Baby Jesus, knocking him out of his manger-crib during the Church Christmas Pageant before storming off stage.

So it's from that experience that "no good deed" became our motto.

but forgot who had said it. So I did a google on it and this guy was a revival preacher. Old time religion it's good enough for me King James type. Which is what I like, the old gospel music, Jesus Loves Everyone style. Not this new brand of hateful fundies. When I die, play some of that old gospel music like When the Roll is Called Up Yonder, and, Good News Chariot's Comin'. Music that makes you snap your fingers and holler. Some gal at work (who pretends to be liberal) told me I wasn't a Christian because I cuss like a sailor. Ha, ha...people!

she says she's a Dem and such but hates homeless people and anyone who's getting food stamps, etc. (I won't tell her what I'm getting!!). She said she'd give food to a homeless person's dog before she'd give him a dime. I said, but he's a Veteran. So, get a job. I asked her how she felt about the homeless people in New Orleans. Once we were at a doughnut shop and a family pushing a cart of stuff and baby strollers prompted her to do the Cheney snarl and said "if they can push a cart, they can get a job." I told her maybe they can't come up with the money for security, etc. (It's very expensive to live here.) Finally, I told her, one day you just might be homeless because you're through out bad karma. She told me she wanted to get what's coming to her ($$$) and doesn't care if the company she works for has a bad record towards women and minorities, and that I hated "rich people" because I'm so "liberal" and poor. Good lord!!!

at least that's what I think, anyway.

She simply doesn't remember that, ultimately, we're ALL connected. It's easier for her to maintain the illusion of separation and judgment, which sadly only leads to more polarization.

I send Compassion and Light to people like that b/c judging THEM only reinforces the separation.

We're all in this together, afterall. :grouphug:
