You as a tennager: what would your theme-song be?
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 12:50 PM by rbnyc
Or what song best describes you as a teen? Doesn't have to be from the decade.

I was just listening to this album, that actually came out well after my high-school years, but so much brings me back to high school, particularly one song.

Just wondering what song everyone else would pick to sum up their high school years.

Mine:

Psychic Hearts by Thurston Moore

I know you have a fucked up life
growing up in a stupid town
your mother was a mixed up chick
and your father he just fucked around
a little too much for his own good
I'd kill the bastard if I could
I'd kill all the boys with their fucked up noise
and all the bullshit they seem to enjoy
the kids at school
called you slut
nothing but
and what the fuck are they into
the stupid fools
losers assholes suck all the luck
out of the world the world for you
if I can get it back to you I will
and kick their asses all over town
all over town I'll turn it over
and I don't even know you that well
what the hell summer spell

what's it like
going out
and no one knows what you're about
abused and used and cut in two
by hollow man with nothing to do

laugh all the time try to get high
and try to hide behind the lie

they fucked your head up
that's for sure
your heart is ripped now wrapped in fur
but you know that sex is pretty insane
and magic seems to kill the pain
and the things that go on inside your brain
makes you seem to think that you're to blame
don't think about it
throw it out
love 'em all and say it loud
fight the scumbags that slap you around
scream your crazy lost and found
we don't have to tell you what is right
we have all the faith that it was not right

sadness is and sadness was
and sadness will always be because
comfort comes around from the strangest of men

I got no time for sad songs baby
don't need you to say I'm crazy
stick your tongue and you look at me
and I will bite it off you see
push you down onto your knees
do you laugh away the flees

you're not the only one in town
but you're the only one that's got me down
psychic hearts go out to you
a psychic heart go round to you

my prayer to you
is that you do all the things you set out to do
and live your life the way you love
but will you remember one thing for me
I will always love you
I will always love you

2. Definatly "Crazy Babies"
by Mr. Ozzy Osbourne

Crazy...
Babies...

Crazy babies never say die
Born to live on a permanent high
Flying high above the world below
They'd better come down soon or everyone will know just why
Nobody's gonna change them, change them
They've gone over the top
Nobody's gonna tame them, tame them
They're never gonna stop

Walk that walk
Talk that talk
Walk that walk
Talk that talk

Crazy...
Babies...

When they were born they were born to be wild
Some say I'm another devil's child
Crazy babies in a world of their own
I am a crazy babe you'd better leave me alone tonight

Nobody's gonna change me, change me
I'm gonna do this 'til I die
Nobody's gonna tame me, tame me
So you better not try

Walk that walk
Talk that talk
Walk that walk
Talk that talk

Crazy...
Babies...

No use talkin 'bout if they'll last
Where they're goin' or about their past
They're just the result of our Society
So frustrated just like you and me, that's right

Nobody's gonna change them, change them
They've gone over the top
Nobody's gonna tame them, tame them
They're never gonna stop

Walk that walk
Talk that talk
Walk that walk
Talk that talk

17. I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper
Lines form on my face and hands
Lines form from the ups and downs
I'm in the middle without any plans
I'm a boy and I'm a man

I'm eighteen
and I don't know what I want
Eighteen
I just don't know what I want
Eighteen
I gotta get away
I gotta get out of this place
I'll go runnin in outer space
Oh yeah

I got a baby's brain and an old man's heart
Took eighteen years to get this far
Don't always know what I'm talkin' about
Feels like I'm livin in the middle of doubt
Cause I'm

Eighteen
I get confused every day
Eighteen
I just don't know what to say
Eighteen
I gotta get away

Lines form on my face and my hands
Lines form on the left and right
I'm in the middle
the middle of life
I'm a boy and I'm a man
I'm eighteen and I LIKE IT
Yes I like it
Oh I like it
Love it
Like it
Love it
Eighteen!
Eighteen!
Eighteen!
Eighteen and I LIKE IT

18. "Let me be" by the Turtles
Please don't mistake me or try to make me
The shadow of anybody else
I ain't the him or her you think I am
I'm just trying hard to be myself
Oh, society's goal is to be part of the whole
That may sound good to you, not to me

Let me be, let me be
To think like I want to
Let me be, let me be
That's all I ask of you
I am what I am and that's all I ever can be

Don't try to plan me or understand me
I can't stand to be understood
I could never give in to or ever live up to
Being like you think I should
I've got some inner need which I'm tryin' to heed
I can't take hand-me-down destiny

Let me be, let me be,
To think like I want to
Let me be, let me be
That's all I ask of you
I am what I am and that's all I ever can be

Don't try to change me or rearrange me
To satisfy the selfishness of you
I'm not a piece of clay to mold to your moves each day
And I'm not a pawn to be told how to move
I'm sorry I'm not the fool you thought would play by your rules
But to-each-his-own philosophy

Let me be, let me be,
To think like I want to
Let me be, let me be
That's all I ask of you
I am what I am and that's all I ever can be

I said that's all I ever can be
I said that's all I ever can be
I said that's all I ever can be

19. The same now as it was back in the day - Tom Sawyer by Rush
A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today's Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride.

Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day's events
The river

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide

Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you

No his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Exit the warrior
Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of earth

20. "Streams of Whiskey" by The Pogues

Last night as I slept
I dreamt I met with behan
I shook him by the hand and we passed the time of day
When questioned on his views
On the crux of life’s philosophies
He had but these few clear and simple words to say

I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

I have cursed, bled and sworn
Jumped bail and landed up in jail
Life has often tried to stretch me
But the rope always was slack
And now that I’ve a pile
I’ll go down to the chelsea
I’ll walk in on my feet
But I’ll leave there on my back

Because I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

Oh the words that he spoke
Seemed the wisest of philosophies
There’s nothing ever gained
By a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I’ll walk into a bar
And drink fifteen pints of beer

Iam going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing
I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing
Where streams of whiskey are flowing
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

22. Lonesome Loser
Lonesome Loser
The Little River Band

Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Beaten by the queen of hearts every time
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
He's a loser, but he still keeps on tryin'

Oohoohooh .... oooh ....

Sit down, take a look at yourself
Don't you want to be somebody
Someday somebody's gonna see inside
You have to face up, you can't run and hide

Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Beaten by the queen of hearts every time
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
He's a loser, but he still keeps on tryin'

Unlucky in love, least that's what they say
He lost his head and he gambled his heart away
He still keeps searching though there's nothing left
Staked his heart and lost, now he has to pay the cost.

Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Beaten by the queen of hearts every time
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
He's a loser, but he still keeps on tryin'

"It's okay", he smiles and says
Though this loneliness is driving him crazy,
He don't show what goes on in his head,
but if you watch very close you'll see it all

(Instrumental)

Sit down, take a look at yourself
Don't you want to be somebody
Someday somebody's gonna see inside
You have to face up, you can't run and hide

Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Beaten by the queen of hearts every time
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
He's a loser, but he still keeps on tryin'

Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Have you heard about the lonesome loser
Now tell me have you heard about the lonesome loser

23. "I Think I'm Paranoid"
You can look but you can't touch
I don't think I like you much
Heaven knows what a girl can do
Heaven knows what you've got to prove

I think I'm paranoid and complicated
I think I'm paranoid, manipulated

Bend me break me
Anyway You need me
All I want is you
Bend me break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

I fall down just to give you a thrill
Prop me up with another pill
If I should fail, if I should fold
I nailed my faith to the sticking pole

I think I'm paranoid, manipulate it
I think I'm paranoid, too complicated
Bend me break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you
Bend me break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

I think I'm paranoid
I think I'm paranoid

Bend me break me
Anyway you need me
All I want is you
Bend me break me
Breaking down is easy
All I want is you

Steal me, deal me, anyway you heal me
Maim me, tame me, you can never change me
Love me, like me, come ahead and fight me
Please me, tease me, go ahead and leave me

Bend me break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's alright
Bend me break me
Anyway you need me
As long as I want you baby it's alright

24. Screaming for Vengeance
This one had it all, the crushing power of the rythym guitar, blistering dual lead guitars, a sweet harmony section, and yes the lyrics actually have a point. Be yourself and go for it.

I was definitely a misfit in high school.

Hey listen don't you let 'em get your mind
Fill your brain with orders, and that's not right
They're playing at a game that draws you closer
Till you're living in a world that's ruled by fear

Always takin' baby out that's OK
What they're givin' maybe it's out of phase with me
Told you once you're never gonna win the race
Same old no tomorrow -- kicked in the face!

We are screaming for vengeance
The world is a manacled place!
Screaming, screaming for vengeance
The world is defiled in disgrace!

Tie a blindfold all around your head
Spin you round in the torture before the dread
And then you're pushed and shoved into every corner
Then they lead you out into the final slaughter.

As the sweat is running down your neck
All your praying for's to stop you body breakin' up
Oh your heart is pumping, gonna soon explode
Got to fight the horror of this mental load.

So you wait it out and bide your time
Rip off that straight jacket gotta break that line
Everyone who wins in the great escape
Leaves a thousand more who suffer in their wake

I don't talk about it but that's alright
Table's turned now there's a revenge in sight
If it takes forever babe I tell ya I can wait
Send them screaming back through their hell's own gate

25. Not a song; a spoken-word piece.
(for the most part my teenage years were some of the unhappiest of my life...)

Henry Rollins - "I Know You"

I know you.

You were too short.
You had bad skin.
You couldn't talk to them very well.

Words didn't seem to work.
They lied when they came out of your mouth.
You tried so hard to understand them.
You wanted to be part of what was happening.

You saw them having fun,
And it seemed like such a mystery...
Almost magic.
Made you think that there was something wrong with you.

You looked in the mirror, trying to find it.
You thought that you were ugly, and that everyone was looking at you.
So you learned to be invisible.
To look down.
To avoid conversation.

The hours.
Days.
Weekends.
Ahh, weekend nights alone.
Where were you?
In the basement?
In the attic?
In the room?
Working some job?
Just to have something to do?
Just to have a place to put yourself?
Just to have a way to get away from them?
A chance to get away from the ones that made you feel so strange, and ill at
ease inside yourself?

Did you ever get invited to one of their parties?
And just sat and wondered if you'd go or not?
And for hours you'd imagine the scanarios that would transpire.

If they would laugh at you.
If you would know what to do.
If you would have the right things on.
If they would notice that you came from a different planet.

Did you get all brave in your thoughts?
That you were going to be able to go in there, and deal with it, and have a
great time?
Did you think that you might be the life of the party?
That all these people were going to talk to you,
And you would find out that you were wrong,
And you had a lot of friends,
And you weren't so strange after all?

Did you end up going?
Did they mess with you?
Did they single you out?
Did you find out you were invited, because they thought you were so weird?

Yeah.
I think I know you.

You spent a lot of time filled with hate.
A hate that was as pure as sunshine.
A hate that saw for miles.
A hate that kept you up at night.
A hate that filled your every waking moment.
A hate that carried you for a long time.

Yes, I think I know you.

You couldn't figure out what they saw in the way they lived.
Home was NOT home.
Your room was home.
A corner was home.
The place they weren't, THAT was home.

I think I know you.
You're sensitive, and you hide it,
Because you fear getting stepped on one more time.
It seems that when you show a part of yourself that's the least bit
vulnerable, someone takes advantage of you.
One of them steps on YOU.

They mistake kindness for weakness,
But you know the difference.
You've been the brunt of their weakness for years.
And strength is something you know a bit about.
Because you had to be strong to keep yourself alive.

You know yourself very well now,
But you don't trust people.
You know them too well.

You try to find that special person,
Someone you can be with,
Someone you can touch,
Someone you can talk to,
Someone who you won't feel so strange around...
And you've found that they don't really exist.
You feel closer to people on movie screens.

Yeah, I think I know you.

You spend a lot of time daydreaming.
And people have made comment to that effect.
That you're self-involved and self-centered.

But they don't know, do they?
About the long night shifts alone.
About the years of keeping yourself company.
All the nights you wrapped your arms around yourself, so you could imagine
someone holding you.
The hours of indecision.
The self-doubt.
The intense depression.
The blinding hate.
The rage that made you stagger.
The devastation of rejection.

Yeah.
Maybe they do know.
But if they do, they sure do a good job of hiding it.

It astounds you how they can be so smooth.
How they seem to pass through life, as if life itself was some divine gift.
And it infuriates you to watch yourself, with your apparent skill in finding
every way possible, to screw it up.

For you, life is a long trip,
Terrifying and wonderful.
Birds sing to you at night.
The rain and sun, the changing seasons, are true friends.
And solitude is a hard won ally, faithful and patient.

Yeah.
I think I know you.

28. Although I would not have admitted it then . . .
"Girl All The Bad Guys Want"

8 o'clock, Monday night and I'm waitin'
To finally talk to a girl a little cooler than me.
Her name is Nona, she's a rocker with a nose ring,
She wears a two way, but I'm not quite sure what that means.

And when she walks,
All the wind blows and the angels sing.
She doesn't notice me!

Cause she is watchin' wrestling
Creamin' over tough guys
Listenin' to rap metal
Turntables in her eyes

It's like a bad movie
She is lookin' through me
If you were me, then you'd be
Screamin' "Someone shoot me!"
As I fail miserably,
Tryin' to get the girl all the bad guys want.
She's the girl all the bad guys want!

She likes the Godsmack and I like Agent Orange
Her cd changer's full of singers that are mad at their dad
She says she'd like to score some reefer and a forty
She'll never know that I'm the best that she'll never have

And when she walks,
All the wind blows and the angels sing.
She'll never notice me!

Cause she is watchin' wrestling
Creamin' over tough guys
Listenin' to rap metal
Turntables in her eyes

She likes 'em with a mustache
Racetrack season pass
Drivin' in a Trans-Am
Does a mullet make a man?

It's like a bad movie
She is lookin' through me
If you were me, then you'd be
Screamin' "Someone shoot me!"
As I fail miserably,
Tryin' to get the girl all the bad guys want.
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!

There she goes again
With fishnets on, and dreadlocks in her hair
She broke my heart, I wanna be sedated
All I wanted was to see her naked!

Now I am watchin' wrestling
Tryin' to be a tough guy
Listenin' to rap metal
Turntables in my eyes
I can't grow a mustache
And I ain't got no season pass
All I got's a moped...moped....moped.....

It's like a bad movie
She is lookin' through me
If you were me, then you'd be
Screamin' "Someone shoot me!"
As I fail miserably,
Tryin' to get the girl all the bad guys want.

She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
(There she goes again)
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
She's the girl all the bad guys want!
(There she goes again)
She's the girl all the bad guys want!

30. Janis Ian: "At Seventeen"
(Though actually, by the time I was 17, things had gotten a little better, but up until then, I always felt these words fit).

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
and high school girls with clear skinned smiles
who married young and then retired
The Valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth

An those of us with ravaged faces
lacking in the social graces
desperately remained at home
inventing lovers on the phone
who called to say -- come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
it isn't all it seems at seventeen

A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
whose name I never could pronounce
said -- Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
The right relationed hometown queen
marries into what she needs
with a guarantee of company
and haven for the elderly

Remember those who win the game
lose the love they sought to gain
in debentures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
exceeds amounts received at seventeen

To those of us who knew the pain
of valentines that never came
and those whose names were never called
when choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
when dreams were all they gave for free
to ugly duckling girls like me

We all play the game, and when we dare
we cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
that all and say -- Come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
at ugly girls like me, at seventeen

32. I overheard my mother and sister discussing this when I was 16...
(My sister was 14).

My mom was listening to a Queen album... when the "I want it all.." song came on, my sister said, "This is MY song...". When the "I'm going slightly mad" song came on, she said "this is Babette's song..."

(obviously with my real name), and I wish I could remember the real names of the songs! The album was my mother's, and I haven't heard it since then. 16 years since and a lot of rum in me tonight don't help me remember!

33. I don't really have a descriptive song, but...
my friends and I used "This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide" as an anthem of sorts back when we were teenagers.

35. Smashing Pumpkins - "1979"
I actually was a teenager when that song came out, but it resonates more with me now as an adult. I always think of those years whenever I hear it...the lyrics are just so spot on for me and my friends during that time. And the video for the song is actually very "me" back then as well.

1979

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we’d never see an end to it all
And I don’t even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don’t know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Double cross the vacant and the bored
They’re not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin dues down to see
That we don’t even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we’d go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we don’t care to shake these zipper blues
And we don’t know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of sound
As you can see there’s no one around

And I should also say, "Bells for Her" by Tori Amos very eloquently (and hauntingly) described something painful that went on between me and the girl who was my best friend during those years. So that would be my "sadder" theme song of the time.
