So, I finished reading 1984 last night...
Let me say that we can joke that it's a Repuke instruction manual, but if it ever gets half as bad as the book makes it, I'll be sure to move onto a remote island first.

2. Hey, at least we can dissent and they can't read our minds.
Though God knows they're trying. :scared:

3. We're free to dissent so long as we don't accomplish anything.
It's like Dilbert.

The Pointy Haired Boss never gets fired.

If it starts to look as if you will get the Pointy Haired Boss fired, you get fired first.

5. Funny thing about that
We had a hastily-convened company meeting not long ago. The president got up and said that there were allegations (unspecified) that were undermining company morale, and that in consequence we all had to decide whether or not we were on the team.

Needless to say, we all walked out more confused and demoralized than we walked in-- except for whoever it was that was engaging in whatever activities were bumming out our fearless leader.

And the joke was, when we walked in, not knowing what the meeting was going to be about, I turned to the guy in the next cubicle but one and said to him, "Time for the Two Minutes Hate."

4. You have to combine it with the Handmaid's Tale
by Margaret Atwood to get just the right mix.

6. What makes you think I'm joking when I say that?
I think their little PR minded minions read it and thought, "Hey, why not? It's all right here!"

Ok, maybe they didn't literally state it like that, but it had to be floatin' around in their little heads somewhere. The last time I read it was after the 2000 election and it scared the shit out of me then. I can't re-read it now--I'd have a frickin' stroke!

Personnally I didn't think that much of the novel but the essay is well worth reading.
