4. Star Wars shouldn't have even been nominated.
It was a pedestrian piece of crap.

I'm sorry. I guess it's time for bed. My bitterness is showing.

9. Haha, I'll agree.
The only worthwhile film Lucas ever made was THX 1138.

10. Not at all. I loved it, but it was certainly no OSCAR contender.
Pedestrian piece of crap?
That may be a harsh way to phrase it,
but it's pretty true.

Thing is: It was a MAGICAL pedestrian piece of crap,
unlike the 5 that followed, which had all the crap but no magic.

30. From a purely CINEMATIC viewpoint, it probably was.
But from a 'PoorRuralStarWarsFan' point of view,
that cliffhanger ending was a big turd in my punchbowl.

It was like I saw 2/3rds of a good movie...and then
it was over.

I felt cheated; I felt tricked.
I paid to see a WHOLE movie. But I didn't recieve a whole movie.
If I wanted to see the end, I had to wait 3 years and
cough up another 2 hours worth of my paycheck.

I was pissed about that until I saw 'Jedi'...
and then I had new things to be pissed about.

13. Naw--it was great cheesy fun
And it's terribly difficult to make a great cheesy fun motion picture. It really is. Try to write a movie as almost universally entertaining as Star Wars is--it isn't easy. Now, is it a "higher" or "lower" order of art than something else? Possibly. The dialogue is largely moronic and uninteresting, for example--but it's still a fun film.

11. Hell, I'm still smarting from "One Flew Over..." beating out "Jaws"
True, it was a marvelous adaptation, but "Jaws" was one of the precious few perfect films ever made.

19. Personally, when it comes to movie scenes for me, nothing beats
the part in Jaws when the sherrif is spooning out chum in the water, talking to someone in the direction of the camera, and Jaws surfaces right off the back of the boat momentarily, rapidly catching the man's attention. I just loved the look on his face so damn much as he jumps upwards.

21. "Why don't you come down and chum some of this shit?"
...leading to the best line of the film....

"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Even if the "surprise" elements are gone after the first watching.

23. I consider it the greatest escapist film ever made
"Jaws" is glorious. Not one false note in the whole thing.

Better than "King Kong."
Better than "The Wizard of Oz."
Better than "Singin' In the Rain."
Better than "The Empire Strikes Back."
Better than "The Lord of the Rings."

25. I remember when I first found a copy of the original Benchly novel.
My family and I were sailing back from Canada after going on a salmon fishing trip there on our family sailboat (not just my direct one, but several other relatives as well). One island we stopped at for a few hours to get lunch, use the restroom and walk around on had an outdoor cafe with a book exchange, and one of the novels I picked up was a weather-beaten, dog-eared copy of Jaws, which I devoured in a day, and reread multiple times over the rest of the trip.

29. Yes, It's one of my favorites
but considering the types of movies that typically win best picture, Star Wars, Rocky, and Titanic make more sense than Annie Hall.

I live right across the river from Philly and I can't stand Stallone or any of the Rocky movies. Network was much better, IMHO.
