Anyone with a Nano iPod, help, I have a question.

I got an iPod Nano and plugged it in last night at about 6 p.m. It is now 18 hours later and the Nano still says "do not disconnect". Is it really bad to disconnect it now? Why can't I? Is it just recharging the batteries? Does it always take this long to recharge.

I listen to books on tape and put the second half of the book I'm listening to on the nano. I finished the first half last night and now I really want to hear what happens! (It's a mystery. Good one.)

1. My kids have the bigger models

and theirs always say that while they are plugged in to the computer. Then when they unplug them, they always get a message saying they disconnected incorrectly. But the ipods always work. So I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Same thing happens when I disconnect my camera and nothing bad has ever happened.

5. You risk losing data if you disconnect that way

You may also cause your system to crash or become unstable, too.

To properly disconnect a device from your computer, you should go to the system tray and select the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon (it has a green arrow and a gray drive-looking thingy on it in WinXP). From the menu, select the device you want to unplug from the menu, and then click the Stop button.

What that does is send the proper command to the OS to tell it that the device is no longer in use (kind of like the "unmount" command in Unix/Linux systems). Otherwise, you could cause some problems.

2. Is iTunes open?

If so, check if it's still (mysteriously) updating something. Otherwise, shut iTunes down and see if the 'Do Not Disconnect' vanishes.

No, it shouldn't take this long to recharge/update. I'd disconnect it, and check the library on your nano out.

3. actually, I didn't know I had to hit the "eject" or "disconnect" button on

iTunes. My son just got up and we hit the "disconnect" button and the "do not diconnect" message went away.

I have a shuffle, it doesn't have a disconnect button. Don't you just hate old people trying to use new technology?

6. That has nothing to do with old people ...

I had to restore my Nano for four times because i either wanted to install Linux on it or did something else. ;)

I just wanted it on my iPod Nano, which ended in restoring the whole firmware using the original installation CD, then update again via web, then restoring the whole library. And I couldn't do it from my computer (didn't see the iPod, no matter what), but had to use Heidi's laptop ... Well, I just had the two hours free, so. :grrr:

11. Oh man, that stinks

It's funny that it wouldn't recognize it on Linux-- especially since OS X is basically FreeBSD Unix at its core, and iTunes was originally written for OS X.

And I won't tolerate any Windows bashing, either. If not for Windows being such a POS, guys like me would be unemployed. :silly:

for the same reason you are. It happens to be the same software all my clients use, so it wouldn't be a good thing to tell them 'Hey, change the OS, that sucks. I don't care if your Outlook friends can't send you anymore PowerPoint presentations or Excel spreadsheets ...' ;)

So, my Windows didn't recognize my iPod nano anymore, even it was set to work like an external disk.

4. Mine says that when it's plugged in and iTunes is open

It's probably charged up, and you only have to "eject" it via iTunes.

To do that, go to the left-hand "source" menu, and select your iPod. Next, right click on it, and select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Once you do that, your iPod will be disconnected from iTunes, and it should display the normal menu. You can then safely disconnect it from your computer.
