5. I think dogs love it more
my sister puts out a bowl of milk for her cat and he lets it sit there for hours before drinking it. Any one of my dogs would be all over that in a heartbeat.

6. On a semi-serious note
I rescued a stray kitten from the side of the road a while back and not having any cat food on hand, we gave her some milk.

Or vet helped us place the kitty in a good home, but on the side she told us that cats are actually lactose intolerant. They like milk because it tastes good, but it can often end up doing a little "Bovine Revenge" in the cats tummy.

Are all cats lactose intolerant? Or just some?

Just curious.

7. Don't know about the technical truth on that, but
I have one who can drink milk all day long and be totally fine. The other has two sips and gets sick all over the place.

17. Cats are like people. Some can handle the milk and some can't.

9. It was true for my cat
Edited on Thu Mar-02-06 08:23 PM by dotcosm
I used to buy lactaid for her, she loved it, and no problems!

edit to add: and because she couldn't drink a whole container before it went bad, I would freeze it in ice cube trays and thus always have good lactaid on hand for her. She lived to 21.

12. Have had some that were OK with milk and some that weren't
The current resident feline prefers yogurt, sour cream, butter or buttermilk

Had a cat who refused to drink milk but could ask for it by name. He would stand by the fridge and howl every morning Meilllll! We would pour out a bit and the OTHER cat would lap it up. The talking cat was always pleased he could order it up for the cat who enjoyed it. He would sit watching her lap her ration and just purr!

Really little cats can have an awful time with milk and many other things. Some of that Gerber rice cereal for babies is good to have on hand if you have wee kitties around. The rice flakes mixed with a bit of broth can be very helpful in times of runny tummy

13. Back in a day when we didn't know cats are supposed to be
lactose intolerant, our cat always drunk milk with no problems whatsoever.

18. Actually, all are
cats don't drink milk after they're weaned. They'll drink it if it's in front of them, but they aren't going to raid your refrigerator to get some. They'd rather have the steak. :9

15. My mom used to tell me
how she'd squirt milk at the cats when she was a girl on a farm in Arkansas.

Milk's how Lucy got me. She was crying at my front door one day and I gave her a saucer of milk. She lapped it up and that was that.

Now I let her drink the milk when I finish a bowl of cereal. Sometimes she wants it, sometimes not. I figure she knows better'n I do.

20. With a buddy of mine, it was tuna
He had a stray show up on his doorstep one day, and he gave it some tuna. When I spoke with him later that day, he told me what he had done and I said, "You fed a stray tuna fish? Lou, you've got yourself a cat!"

He named him Jimi.

25. Ever see the Disney movie "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar"?
Saw this *years* ago as a kid. There's a scene where a farmhand is squirting milk into the cat's mouths. The cougar walks in and the cats skedaddle. The farmhand fires another squirt at the cats, and does a good double take. :D
