4. A friend of mine talked about it
I created a profile and then realized it is a freak show. I converted my profile to a "band" one and use it for that now. I don't have much there, but most of my "friends" are musicians.

What I found strange is that the twenty-somethings seem to use it like a place to hang out and the 30 plus crowd use it as a sex market. Really strange and a bit pitiful if you ask me.

5. I had a very weird encounter with myspace people recently.
I go to meet my buddies at the local Dave & Busters for beers and one of them is a member of the Myspace "Atheist And Agnostic" club. First off, they asked us to hold hands and recite "ring around the rosie". Second, since my bro and I refused to join in, they called us "fence sitters" and then started singing children's songs.

Sad thing is - I wish I could say I was making this shit up. It was quite possibly the weirdest thing I've ever witnessed.

16. Myspace is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.
that alone gives me a reason to hate it. the same guy that brought you fox news, now owns myspace.

check out this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4697671.stm

gives a pretty good insight into why he bought it: "Myspace, News Corp says, could drive traffic to Fox Interactive Media. And most importantly, Myspace has detailed logs of its users' preferences, online behaviour and personal information." - "Of course, every page of Myspace content contains adverts - and Mr Murdoch left his listeners in no doubt that their books would bleed red ink unless they found ways of exploiting the boom in online advertising."

13. extremely creepy, my friends daughter has a myspace page that i looked
at and i couldn't believe what she had posted on it so i asked my friend if she'd looked at and she said no, well she went and looked, had a shitfit and made her cancel it. I don't think a lot of parents have a clue as to what myspace is like.

14. Creepy.
Blogged there for awhile. Too clique-ish and high school meat-markety.

Can't count how many unsolicited emails I got from 18-21 year old boys wanting me to 'teach them' what I know.

:wtf:

15. Apparently some very strange, strange stuff there.
Some rumors here in Richmond about stalking going on there regarding a VCU coed who was killed here last fall. I don't have any kids of my own, but if I did, I think I'd either strongly caution them about that place or block it. Of course, there are probably hundreds of clones just like it. Parents really need to talk frankly with kids about that stuff - it may not help, but it can't hurt either.

28. There're creepy places all over the internets
Hell, there're creepy places at DU. :scared:

MySpace is suffering from some bad PR right now because our lib'rul media, which doesn't know shit about the internets, takes information and runs with it — i.e. the bad man contacted the girl/boy via MySpace, therefore MySpace is a den of inequity. It's been the same with AOL for years, to the point that AOL bashing has become passé.

There's nothing creepy at all about the tiny little corner of MySpace I inhabit.

36. shrug!
How is different from any other create-your-own-web-space service, like Livejournal or Friendster etc.?

My boyfriend (age 32) has a page for his band and he's mostly linked up with other band sites. When I write about music I wind up doing a lot of research there since a lot of bands use Myspace for their homepages these days. It allows you to upload sound files and have a blog and link to others with common interests...I don't see a lot of kids on there because the musicians I look up mostly link other musicians...

It's no more or less inherently creepy than the Internet in general.

37. 'Why Youth Heart MySpace'
Many of you may have heard about MySpace, most likely due to moral panic brought on by the media's coverage of the potential predators and bullying. There is no doubt that the potential is there, but there are more articles on predators on MySpace than there have been reported predators online. Furthermore, bullying is a practice that capitalizes on any available medium. Moral panics are a common reaction to teenagers when they engage in practices not understood by adult culture. There were moral panics over rock&roll, television, jazz and even reading novels in the early 1800s <1>. The media, typically run by the parent generation, capitalizes on and spreads the fear with little regard for data or actual implications. Examples are made out of delinquent youth, showing how the object of fear ruined them in some way or other. The message is clear - if you don't protect your kids from this evil, they too will suffer great harm to their minds, bodies or morals.
