Lower-back tattoos with hip-hugger pants and a too-short shirt:

Yes, or no?

1. Are you asking whether I like it, or whether it should be allowed?
I personally think it looks tasteless - but that's just my personal opinion. It's the choice of the person dressing whether they like the look or not.

I don't think there are any bans in the works. That would be a bit extreme!

3. Depends on how old the butt is the tattoo is on
If it's a fat saggy wrinkled old butt like most of my peers, yuk. If it's a faded old heart that looks like a tire track, double yuks.

And now that we've realized it's STILL WINTER, let's try this in July.

9. Well, I didn't want to be *that* judgmental.
I know a lot of women who dress like this, and they are very nice, not trashy. They are, however, mostly a bit younger than me (37). In my day, it was all about the short skirts or form-fitting high-waisted jeans. I kind of like the way the look shows off a woman's curves, but really, you almost have to have a body like Cher, circa 1977 to pull it off.

No, it's more about how the tight hip-huggers make any tiny bit of fat bulge out the sides, making even fit, attractive women look fat. The tattoo is just the cherry on top of the flab sundae.

20. Disturbing fact or fiction?
I was told that women with lower back tatoos run increased risk with epidurals as it's "unsafe" to insert the needle through the tatoo.

Now this is probably a groundless rumor to destroy everyone's fun...but something to consider if you are planning on giving birth and want the drugs.

36. It's completely a myth
Allegedly, some claim that it's unsafe because the ink will go into your spine. The ink isn't going anywhere and it's also harmless. If real tattoo ink was toxic, it wouldn't be put in your body at all. That said, here's a link to the BMEzine encyclopedia on it.

http://encyc.bmezine.com/?cmd=search&query=epidural

BME is the best source of body modification info anywhere.

54. Real tattoo ink used to BE toxic!
Especially the red.

Red ink at least used to contain cinnabar (mercuric oxide) or cadmium red, both of which are highly toxic. Naphthol red (made out of naphtha) is the most popular red today. The fact that it's essentially petroleum may explain why red hurts the worst of any color.

Orange can contain a cadmium alloy.

Greens that have been used include ferricyanides, ferrocyanides and lead chromate.

Blue is a cobalt pigment.

White can contain white lead.

85. Myth.
Friend w/ a lower back tat had an epidural during childbirth. I was in the room and nothing was said. She had to sign a waiver but I had to sign a waiver to receive one and my tat is not on my lower back.

An epidural is the increased risk. If not done properly-you know the stories.

86. Actually, lower back is a great place to get one for a woman.
It's the classic cover-up: you can show it when it's appropriate and, when it's time to go to work, it's very easy to cover. I have a friend who is a teacher and she decided on getting a lower back tat for that very reason.

She doesn't wear hiphuggers or low riders(depending on what era you grew up in) because she feels that they are inappropriate for her profession as a small town teacher. But when she's on vacation she can show her tat in a bikini (well away from prying eyes). And her husband loves it-says it gives her a wild streak that no one in town has to know about except him.

Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 06:50 AM by last_texas_dem
The hip-hugger pants with the too-short shirt= personally, looks very good to me on some women, not so much on others. I think it tends to look the best if a woman is curvy because it accentuates the curves. Which ON EDIT I guess goes against what many on here think. I guess I think it looks better on a curvy woman than a thin one just because there is something there to show off. Not that it necessarily looks bad on a thin woman, though. But it's kind of like a basically skinny guy like me wearing a tank top. It won't necessarily look bad (other than the potentially blinding effect of so much snow white skin, in my case) but there's not really anything to accentuate by showing off your upper arms, either.

As for the tattoos in general, I've never really gotten into them (and haven't figured out the whole lower-back trend on girls and women). I've just never really had the desire for one; perhaps most of all because I can't think of anything I'd like to have drawn or written on my body for the rest of my life. But it's one of those "personal taste" things that I don't consider that important; if someone is very attractive, they're attractive, tattoo or not.

45. Not too curvy
I have seen some women, teen-agers, kids wearing this look but should not. The spare tire thing above the jeans simply is not attractive. The tatoo thing only works for some as well. Too many tattoos are just plain ugly in my opinion. It kinda remainds my of decorating like for the holidays. Some people just don't know when to stop. A few sets of lights and a snowman look nice but add a santa with reindeer, the grinch, candycanes, lights on every possible surface the blow up polar bears and you get tacky!

50. My hair stylist got one of those
years ago when married to the ex. She is now spending beaucoup bucks to have the nasty thing eradicated.

On a recent visit with my sister, the topic came up that my teenaged niece wants the lower back tattoo. I advised the young lady that this noxious thing was known as a "tramp stamp", and that my very hip and fashionable stylist was going through great pain and expense to get rid of hers.

I like tattoos, don't get me wrong, have one myself. But I think this is just an icky trend.

47. It is only good if the butt crack is also exposed
since these tattoos mostly say "Look at my exposed flesh!" I actually think an exposed butt crack, on a nice firm derrierre, is rather sexy. Call me a pervert if you must.

The lower back tatto is the wonderful fashion cliche of our current era.

I actually don't mind it in the least, as long as it is not on me, and I am not paying the money down the road to have it removed. The cost to remove it is about ten times the cost of the tattoo.

66. You can tell that a woman is a "whore"
just by the way she dresses and/or what kind of tattoos she has and/or where the tattoos are located?

WHORE
1 : a woman who engages in sexual acts for money : PROSTITUTE; also : a promiscuous or immoral woman

58. ew, my biggest fashion pet-peeve-------
you know the types--they wear jeans that are 2-4 sizes too small and have that roll of unnecessary flabby ickiness hangning out...

The irony is that most of the girls (anyone who dresses like this deserves the lesser title, imho) are not heavy at all, if they would just wear the right size clothing, they'd look great.

I just don't get it...

69. Hi, Skittles!
Please don't kick my a$$, but I don't know how anyone can discern whether a person is "trashy" by the way they dress. I normally judge others by the way they treat the people around them, and I've seen a lot more well-dressed people treating folks badly than tattooed women in hip-huggers treating people badly.

70. Amen. You've never lived until you've tried to eat fried oysters while...
the girl at the next table, with her back to you, shines her asscrack at you through your whole meal. Yep. Short shirt, whore-brand (that's just what they're called here--the tattoos, I mean) hip-huggers, with three full inches of a shining ass crack that she never did even attempt to cover.

It was disgusting---it completely demonstrated her trashiness to me. Ass cracks (and some whore brands) should be kept in private.

72. I, too, think it looks "tacky"
(as though the person hasn't learned to dress tastefully) but still, I'm surprised at some of the comments in this thread by people describing women who dress this way as "whores" and "skanks." Heck, I've seen plenty of plumbers' cracks, but I wouldn't call the plumber a "whore" or a "skank" just because I've seen his butt.

73. You have REALLY seen plumbers' ass cracks?
I never have--except on Saturday Night Live or other comedy shows.

But, still, a plumber accidently shows his crack. This girl KNEW her ass was hanging out, and she was proud to show it.

Yeah, when I see someone letting their ass crack hang out and especially when they do nothing to correct the problem, like, oh, I don't know, hitching their pants up, I have a tendency to believe that their ass is showing because they want to show it, and, in my judgment, that's not only tacky, but also trashy.

74. Plumber's crack.
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 08:13 AM by Heidi
Many years ago, when I was married to someone else, we had to call a plumber/refrigerator-repairman because our fridge was leaking water from the bottom. So the plumber, a local guy named John, gets to the house, pulls the fridge out, then gets down behind the fridge to look at the coils, showin' both me and my ex about half of his big ol' hairy butt.

So, both my ex and I were stifling giggles and trying to avert our eyes, when we hear John swearing because he left an important wrench out in the truck. My ex, always eager to help out another manly man, says, "Say, John, you can just use my plumber's crack. My toolbox is right here." Biggest. Freudian. Slip. Ever. :spray:

(The plumber was so exasperated about our fridge that he didn't even notice my ex-husband's unseemly offer.)

77. Peace, Maddy.
Maybe "several" would be more accurate. (I was a journalist and homeowner for 22 years. I've saw a lot of things.)

I'll just back out of this thread, where so many people seem to think lower-back tattoos are a good gauge of a woman's sexual behavior.

79. Nah, I don't think that.
I just think that they've become all too common...more college kids around here seem to have them than don't have them.

But I will say that showing one's ass crack on purpose instead of occupationally is what I said it was.

Peace. :hi:

96. Plumbers have a very legitimate excuse
Wearing jeans and crouching a lot as one works will naturally cause asscrack exposure. Dressing in a certain manner to show off your asscrack is more questionable

82. Here's a photo circa 1893...

Is this Polynesian guy trashy?

I wouldn't choose to have a tattoo on my lower back, but I also wouldn't judge everyone who has one as trashy. I had an ex-girlfriend with one, and it wasn't trashy in the slightest.

I think it looks VERY trashy; as far as the Polynesian guy goes, well, I don't live where he does nor did I grow up with the same customs so I don't know what was going on there

95. I just react when I hear someone called trashy, just because of something
like a tattoo on their lower back.

I reserve my contempt for people who do bad things. Not for people who look a certain way.

I also don't think that everyone in our society should have to limit their expressiveness or life choices based on anyone else's customs. Otherwise, I wouldn't even be allowed out of the closet.

Peace.

I'd have to know them to know that - but displaying a tatoo pointing at your ass certainly LOOKS trashy to me.

81. Ill-fitting clothes don't flatter anyone.
The outfit you describe sounds like a recipe for tummy bulge. I was young the last time hiphuggers were the fashion. Even with a longer top, they did NOT flatter me--so I avoided them.

Tattoos? A matter of taste.

84. The tattoo should be an interesting literary excerpt...
..you know, so I have something to read when I get bored.

Apart from that option, I find the whole look, particularly lower-back tattoos completely off-putting. It is never attractive. Now that I'm dating again, it's a "deal-breaker", like smoking.

And what's with the predictable designs? "O-o-h-h-h, you have an ankh/heart with wings/Celtic knot/Harley logo/abstact calligraphy/butterfly/rose with thorns/dragonfly/five-point star on your lower back, how original! It speaks volumes about your creativity and your stand against conformity. Fight the machine."

I'm putting all my money into tattoo removal parlours; the Starbucks of the mid-21st century.
