"Company Man/Woman" Syndrome - How can it be cured?
I love Mr. B very much but his "company man" attitude gets on my freaking nerves. He is a very talented person at what he does, he has made a lot of money for many companies he has worked for BUT he has not been very good about taking care of himself. He yearns for someone to pat him on the head and say .."good boy"..."good job"..."atta boy"..."here is a new title"...(but no raise)...

Yesterday he calls me overjoyed with good news about his job...and it turns out to be another title without the money to go with it....but it will come with more definite responsibilities...oh goodie...

And today..today is the real kicker...he wants our family to pay for his new company laptop because "the company is tight on funds"...oh yeah...I am going to shell out $1600 for a new laptop so that he can do more work for them....

This has happened at whatever company he has worked....!!!!!

Tell me... can this be cured!!!!!

1. I didn't know those people were still out there.
Does he not read the news? Companies don't feel a similar loyalty to their workers. They won't think twice about laying him off or cutting benefits if it helps the company.

3. get him to read Rich Dad Poor Dad
Yes theres a lot of real estate propaganda in that book but it does have a point of why should you kill yourself to make someone else rich. I have a lot of "company" co-workers and I just shake my head at them sometimes.

6. Getting fired cured me
of 60-hour weeks without OT, of doing tons of stuff that wasn't in my job description, of covering for incompetent co-workers.

Just sayin'.

10. see above...didn't work..
if anything he felt bad about himself...which made me feel awful...cuz he is a really wonderful person. His self-esteem was really shaken...even though he was doing a great job it wasn't his fault he got laid off...it was the incompetence of the entire company and the managers which caused their problems...

12. no...he works for a for profit company...
I also want to add that his company isn't asking him to do this kind of stuff...he imposes it upon himself most of the time.
The whole laptop idea is his...he wants a faster one so he can be more productive....ugh!!!

He works for a very nice company (the people there are very nice to him) but hell why would they argue with someone so motivated....it's like a bonus for them...

13. Sorry
But I refuse to subsidize any corporation I work for. A non-profit, it would depend. My employers get enough out of me and my soul is not for sale.

All the best. Once you've been sucked in, it's hard to turn back.

15. So he's not money centered.
He'd rather be know as the guy who's easy to get along with, doesn't make waves, a swell guy. Probably feels that if he gets paid more, he won't be able to handle the responsibility if something goes wrong. Been there, done that. He needs a whack in the head. Want me to come there and do it?

I love him so much and it just pains me to watch him get himself so worked up over work...

like I said..he works for really nice people, who pay him well and they actually have benefits which is last job didn't, but he actually stresses himself out more on his own...

edit:...and he is most definitely not money centered...

17. Sounds like an mirror image of myself.
Hard to break that trait without therapy. He just doesn't think he's good enough, even tho everyone else knows he is. Must have abandonment issues or a set of absent, cold parents. Guess you'll just have to catch him when he falls. Probably why he loves you...you're his strength.
