A five bladed razor?
I think it's the ad for the new five bladed "Fusion" razor that finally drove me over the edge.

I just went back to a traditional safety razor after years of messing around with multi bladed "system" razors.

I remember when the thought of even a three bladed razor was an SNL joke: "The Triple Trac is designed for people who'll believe anything they see."

I also hate the fact that these "systems" tend to go out of style every few years, forcing you to junk the old handles. And disposables just seem wasteful. Replacement blades for the safety razor have been around for like a hundred years and cost next to nothing.

2. I stopped with the Mach 3. It's plenty good enough for me.
Plus, I've gotten about four Mach 3 handles over the years, some paid, some freebies, and I don't feel like adding more plastic to my life. Also, Costco sells Mach 3 blades at a good price.

4. I have 3 Mach 3's also. Do you remember the gillete beige disposable
gillete microtrack? They were excellent... good for three awesome shaves and were way better than the disposable goodnews or the bic. They were discontinued and were my fave.

7. That's what I use.
I think it works well enough except I only get two or three uses out of each blade.

12. And usually I only shave
with it every other day. After using them a few times, they just get too rough for my skin.

19. hahaha
I have been living in China for the last 18 months and I just today started using the 5th (and last) razor in the pack. Conclusions - 1) Mach 3 is really good 2) My forefathers were a hybrid mix of Scandanavians and hairless cats. My wife is Chinese *lol* our kids are going to be hairless freaks!

21. Did you see the MadTV skit?
It came out around the time of the big triple-blade razor frenzy. They had one of their faux commercials featuring a 20-blade razor. It not only cut the beard, but stripped away several layers of skin plus the hair follicles ensuring the beard would not grow back (at least not anytime soon).

16. I hate shaving.
But the fusion is the most comfortable razor I have ever used. Plus, I don't get that annoying five o'clock shadow that the Mach 3 gives me about eleven in the morning....

25. I got a free one (Long story)
And I was a bit skeptical, but I have to say it's far and away the best shave I've ever had -- way better even than a straight razor shave at the barber's.

Also, I have a pretty tough beard -- and it's about the most comfortable shave I've ever had too.

As always, MAD wasn't far off the mark.

17. I remember not long after SNL
mocked the three bladed razor, they mocked a four or five blade razor, showing it removing chucks of flesh in order to shave below skin level.

20. I gave up on those "fancy" razors a long time ago
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 03:23 AM by Nutmegger
I just switched to a D/E razor and despite cutting the hell out of my face, it works. What pushed me over the edge was the fact that it cost eight bucks for five freaking blades!!!

Does anybody have any good tips for this D/E newbie?

22. ''How to Use Your Double-Edge Razor''

How to Use Your Double-Edge Razor: http://www.classicshaving.com/articles/article/590351/20879.htm

Cuts or razor burn? If burn, you are probably using too much pressure. One of the reasons multiblade razors are more comfortable is the pressure is distributed over all those blades plus the teflon thingy and (in some cases) a trailing rubber thingy. If you are actually cutting yourself, all I can say is be careful and read the article for tips on how to avoid cuts.

With a D/E razor, you need 1) a sharp blade (this is easy cause they cost like twenty cents apiece) and 2) the lightest pressure possible.

28. Thank you
It's more like razor burn. I still have to get use of how to hold the thing and pressure as you've said.

Many thanks for the help!:hi::pals:

..and I buy 'em when they're less than a dollar per cartridge.
Clean and dry the little blades after each use and they last a long time.

32. congratulations !! welcome back to the good old days
I've been using a double edged razor my entire adult life (@20 years) and I've never had any issues or problems with it. It's the same type of razer my father used and it works just fine. I never noticed any difference between my face and the guy next to me, but maybe it just doesn't matter to me that much.

I never understood the point of the shaving 'systems', other than marketing or some sort of hype. I just never saw the need, but then I don't see the need for many modern consumer products.

I guess it takes a little skill to be able to shave with one, but it's not rocket science, and it's significantly cheaper, and more eco friendly. the blades are less expensive to produce and dispose of.

33. I'm using the Mach 3 Turbo
After a week's getting used to it (ie. slice-and-dice) it worked pretty well.

But now that it's time to get new blades, I'm beginning to reconsider ever purchasing the dumb thing: a pack of 5 blades costs $12.
