13. I think I've evolved past the need for sleep.
Or maybe I'll die, I don't know.

15. I mean...why are you staying awake?
I thought I'd be pulling an all-nighter tonight, but I decided to skip my morning class and get work done for my afternoon class. It's all OK, because I've never ditched my morning class before and attendance isn't mandatory. Besides, the professor likes me. :-)

16. On Monday, I slept from 7am to 6pm at night.
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 02:29 AM by SmileyBoy
Maybe there's a connection there... It still wouldn't explain the absence of sleep for 31 straight hours.

BTW, I only have classes this semester on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have Wednesdays off and whole four-day weekends off. That's why I can afford to stay up late.

14. I think I may have had too much caffeine.
But the last caffeine drink I had was over 13 hours ago, so that can't be it.

Maybe it's something psychological.

4. Are you hallucinating yet?
When I stayed up for 36 hours I hallucinated a purple-black spider with like a brazillion legs. It was pretty cool!

19. Get off the computer, turn off the TV, take a long hot shower or bath
eat some peanut butter on toast and get in bed with a book

Honest. It works.

Not sleeping is hard on the brain (not to mention you banging your head on the wall.... :banghead: )

20. I did exactly what you said to do last night
(Minus the peanut butter w/ toast, though). Took a long, hot shower, read a book, laid in bed... Nothing.

It's approaching 32 hours.

23. Peanut butter has tryptophan
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 02:45 AM by Whoa_Nelly
Here...a little sleepy reading about it for you:

Can't get to sleep? Complex carbohydrates mixed with a little bit of protein may help you drift into dreamland, according to experts. The perfect combo is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Peanut butter contains tryptophan, a chemical known to cause sleepiness. Use whole wheat bread for your complex carbohydrates and you will have a healthy snack as well as a good night's sleep.

21. Doing that kind of thing when you're young is an adventure...
but, when you get older, you'll wonder why you bothered.

It's about learning your limits, so, learn your limits and move on.

This whole thing would probably be a moot point if I was 40 anyway.

25. From a practical point of view....
if you really want to go to sleep (without a prescription) try lettuce, especially iceberg, which has a natural sedative in the part near the core. Tommorrow, go to Walgreens or Target and buy Melatonin or go to a natural foods store or co-op and buy Valerian root (a nasty smelling herb that makes a tea guaranteed to knock you out).

If you don't have any of these available to you tonight and you do want to sleep, make yourself comfortable (get off the computer!) and read something boring.

Good luck! (I think you'll be OK.)

26. Sleep deprivation makes things really neat, huh?
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 03:01 AM by ALiberalSailor
I once went 4 days with only 3 half-hour naps. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but your perspective
certainly changes on things quickly, and sometimes violently. I suppose it's the closest I'll ever get to experiencing what PMS might
be like.

30. As someone who has experienced both sleep deprivation,
voluntary and non-voluntary, AND PMS, I will tell you that sleep deprivation is truly mind-altering. PMS just brings concerns and anxieties closer to the surface. There is very little similarity, especially because PMS usually coincides with feeling sleepier (really a time to look inward).

Sleep deprivation can have an interesting adrenaline rush, but it's not a good thing for one's overall health.
