I think there are some really neat people here who are way under-represented on the hearts, and I'm not going to say that people with a lot of hearts don't deserve them, but the whole thing rankles. Some of the people here who I consider "buddies" have like, 10, but other people who I think are every bit as worthy have ONE than *I* gave them.

And I don't doubt the lounge has always been a popularity contest, but it just seems so middle school. I talk to the people I like and blow off the people I don't like, but I alone know who I do and don't like, so I doubt the people I don't like feel insulted by my lack of interest in them. I'm sure there are people here who don't like me, but I don't know who they are and I don't really care. I've met 3 DU'ers IRL (two I knew from before I ever got on DU), and everyone else it's just an online thing, and I know from experience that online friends aren't necessarily real life friends, and people you don't like online might actually be really cool.

But the whole idea of making it public who is and isn't "popular" just bugs me. We all start out the same here. I know there are fat, thin, male, female, young, old, educated, uneducated, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, disabled, American, foreign, gay, straight, and every other kind of DU'ers imaginable. But we're all just words on a screen to each other. There's no prejudice here.

Giving out hearts takes a fairly egalitarian playing field and makes it less so. It's bad enough that the number of postings is shown, 'cause that's used as a basis for prejudice.

I know I'm not one of the "in" crowd here, so maybe I'm bitter, but I think the whole concept of an "in" crowd here is inevitable but kinda crappy nevertheless.

It's nice to tell people that you apreciate them, but if they were permanent they would be a status symbol. People would be judged by how many hearts they have, and people with no hearts might not be taken seriously by some.
