Can anyone help with these iPod nano questions?
So I finally bought myself an mp3 player, and fell victim to the overpriced ones. I got the white nano, but I am having three issues:

First, I can't figure out how to get the little photos on it (for instance, when a song is playing you can have the album cover photo alongside the song title).

Second, I have it in my bag during the day, and I'll be sitting in class and hear 50 Cent playing...and realize my nano turned on. Is there any way to keep it turned off so when it gets barely bumped or touched it doesn't turn on?

Finally, does anyone have any suggestions for a covering for the nano (ie the "skins")? I saw a seller on ebay selling clear plastic cases for them which he claims are better than Apple's "skins" because they don't protect the screen. Can anyone make any recommendations?

Any iPod expertise is greatly appreciated :)

5. I noticed they have some on ebay...
That protect the cover. I remember you saying something about your iskin and apparently a lot of people wonder why the screen isn't protected at all.

I guess I'll have to buy one of those - it would seem the screen needs protection more than anything.

3. First problem: you're listening to 50 Cent
Secondly, you're listening to 50 Cent when you're supposed to be in class. You know? Learning something? The reason you're there?

Thirdly, do you really need to have a picture of the fucking album to know what you're listening to? Has our society come down to this?

First, I like many different kids of music - I have everything from 50 Cent to Leann Rimes to Frank Sinatra on my iPod. And, I do enjoy a lot of 50's music. Ever heard of to each their own? Guess not.

Second, I wasn't trying to listen to it in class. It was in my bag and went off during class because it got bumped (hence, my problem with it).

Third, if you have nothing to add other than crap, then why post a reply? If I want to have a photo of an album, I can damn well do it. If that makes you angry, then maybe you don't have enough to worry about. :eyes:

Geez, you must have woke up on the wrong damn side of the bed today.

That makes it all OK.

PS - I have never figured out how/when that picture shows up.

7. Yes, how about that?
I'm technologically challenged, so it goes without saying I haven't figured it out. It isn't a necessity obviously, but just something that might be fun to add if I could. :)

8. I see it pop up in iTunes sometimes
but not all the time.

I don't have one of those fancy schmancy newer iPods, though. Just an original. :)

9. Hey
I think he sucks too but Im not going to knock ya for it.. Listen to whoever ya want :)

Anyway - back to your topic:

I have the black Ipod and at the top of it is a little switch to lock it so it doesnt turn on or off when you dont want it to. As far as the scratching goes - I honestly think its going to happen one time or another - I keep mine in the little case that came with it and it seems to help. I also seen on the apple site there are 'rugged' protectors and they seem to be a good idea since Im hard on things - especially electronics.

13. Well, I think your kitties rock :)
They're some beautiful kitties you got there!

So that's what that button is for? I think it is the "hold" button? That would be a big help. I went to turn it on today and the battery was dead because it apparently had turned on (again) and the battery was drained.

Thanks for the help - it is much appreciated!

10. I suggest a silicone skin, even though they pick up lint
I think they protect from scratches better than hard cases -- iPod can't rattle around in a skin

Skins protect the screen just fine, as well as the wheel

Flip the "hold" switch on top of iPod before you put it in your bag to keep it from turning on when it's touched by its neighbor

14. Thanks!
I like the silicone ones better, so I think I'll go with that. I'm not too clumsy (in terms of dropping it), so I am hoping I don't need the hard cases.

And thanks bunches for the "hold" button explanation. That will definitely save my battery (which was dead today after it was apparently on for three hours!)

Thanks bertha

11. For adding the album pictures
you go into iTunes and right click on any song you have there, which gives you a seperate window with the informations. There are some little tabs, and one says 'Artwork.' There is where you can upolad a picture to a song.

I'm not sure about the picture size, though. (I don't use this feature, although it comes automatically when you buy songs from iTunes.)

12. I might be able to help a bit.
Instead of a skin, you can try using an Agent18 hard-plastic shell. I've been happy with mine. It completely covers the Nano except for the menu wheel and it has a removable bottom cover so you can dock it. One big drawback for the Nano, at least according to what I read, that it is pretty fragile. Anyways, here's a product description from Apple:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/7201101/wo/Av4fQm5RcRcp2SCq8Ms14WgrbDo/3.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3

As far as it accidentally turning on, there is a lock switch on the top of the Nano. If you slide the switch over to HOLD, then the menu wheel is disabled.

I haven't played with the photo feature yet, I just got it in November.

23. My bad...wasn't clear. My sister recommended a product for the scratches.

I haven't used it, but she claims it works well. Kind of pricey.

Good to know that apart from the screen it's rather indestructible. But, I'm still not letting my 2-yo touch it.

15. I have one of these protecting my nano
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 05:18 PM by Rob H.
It's the iSkin Duo, from (who else?) iSkin. A little pricey, but it works great. A word of advice, though: ironically, when I was putting in the hard plastic screen protector it scratched the screen, so be careful. (Or more careful than I was, anyway.)

Edit: When you add album artwork (using the process Call Me Wesley provided so helpfully above), I've found that going to Amazon.com, searching for the album, clicking on the 'Larger View' link for the album art and then dragging that to the box for the artwork in the info window works well. It can be a pain if you have a lot of albums already copied into iTunes and a slow 'net connection like I do, though.

Further edit: You'll have to make sure to have all the songs on a particular album hightlighted, Get Info, click 'Yes" when it asks if you want to set info for the entire group of songs, and then add the artwork. If you don't select all the songs, only whichever song is highlighted when you add the artwork will have the artwork added to it.

16. Use the "hold" button on the nano to keep it from playing
If you look at the top of it, you'll see a very tiny slider with the word "HOLD" next to it. Slide that to the right, and you'll see a padlock appear in the upper-left corner of the screen. Do that while the iPod is either paused or off, and that will prevent it from coming on when it's in a bag.

Also, get a holder of some sort for it. I bought a leather carrier at Best Buy for about $12 that also comes with a small plastic sheet that fits over the screen. The nanos are notorious for the screens getting scratched up easily. Covering it up not only prevents future scratches, but it also seems to make any current scratches less visible, too.

As far as the album art goes, I think that will only show up on songs you've downloaded from iTunes. But don't quote me on that.

Hope this helps!

17. I have a full sized video iPod, not a nano
But, as far as getting album art on a track, all you have to do is drag and drop the picture in iTunes while the song is playing. If you're running 6.0.2 (the latest), there should be a box in the lower left part of the browser panel (under your playlists) that says "drag album artwork here". Drag and drop the appropriate artwork while the song is playing in iTunes. Next time you update the iPod it'll put it on there.

Hope that helped, I'm new to iPods myself (have had this one, my first for just under 2 weeks), and I'm loving it.

22. If you want to put album cover artwork in iTunes...
As far as I know that's the only way to get album covers on your nano (most songs purchased through iTunes come with album cover artwork)
I found this site:

www.slothradio.com/covers/

works best. It pulls album covers from Amazon.com and other various online music outlets.
Whoever posted this link on this board (it was several months ago), I thank you.

25. I don't have an ipod but do have a brand new digital camera with a screen
that I was worried about protecting. My husband had a brainstorm! We both have hand-held Palm type devices for which we purchased (at CompUSA) a packet of little clear plastic kind-of adhesive screen covers. The packet has the plastic sheeting cut exactly to the size of the hand-held device. However, for my camera, he cut the plastic to fit my digital camera screen, and its working perfectly! No scratches at all, and I keep it in my purse frequently. I think you could do the exact same thing for your Nano screen, with very little cost involved... The plastic is transparent, leaves no sticky residue on your screen, but protects your screen from scratches.
