John Holmes Wins FBR Open

"Scottsdale, Ariz. (AP) -- PGA Tour rookie and former Kentucky golfer J.B. Holmes gained five shots on his nearest competitor on the 15th hole and walked away with a seven-stroke victory Sunday at the FBR Open, only his fourth tournament since joining the PGA Tour.
The hard-driving 23-year-old golfer from Kentucky shot a 5-under-par 66 in the final round -- including a 5-under 31 on the back nine -- to finish at 21-under 263 and win $936,000. Combined with his $127,500 he won for a 10th-place tie at the Sony Open in Hawaii, Holmes becomes the fastest to win $1 million on the tour in PGA history. It took Retief Goosen five tournaments to reach $1 million in 2001.

Ryan Palmer, who made the turn with a one-shot lead, hit the water twice for a triple bogey on the par-5, 552-yard 15th, while his playing partner Holmes sank a 14-footer for an eagle. Holmes' one-shot lead expanded to six, and the tournament was decided."

John Holmes is, errr, long. His drive on 18 was over 350 yards.

Funny thing, on TV the call him JC holmes. Too funny.

6. JB Holmes and Bubba Watson are an incredible new era on the PGA Tour
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 12:35 AM by Awsi Dooger
Young bombers who can blast it 350+. Watson probably hits it slightly further but Holmes has a more established pedigree based on winning the tour school with 6 straight rounds in the 60s.

I realize this is a gag thread. A week ago Gary McCord was calling him John Holmes on the air and I was anticipating all the jokes if that continued. But CBS called him JB Holmes all this week.

7. You are right
This is a joke thread, but they are real exciting players.

The idea of "Tiger-proofing" courses is dumb. When courses get lengthened ONLY the long hitters can win. I think the PGA tour has to consider allowing the speed of the greens to be increased week to week (but that also hurts the shorter player). I definitely think the rough is too short week to week. Maybe narrow the fairways.

8. It was amazing ignorance
Just look at the extremes. If every hole was 2 feet long, then all the players would be even. If every hole was Atlantic to Pacific, then obviously the big hitters would have a surreal advantage since they gain on every shot.

How that wasn't obvious back in '97 is incredible to me. Lengthening the courses further narrowed the potential champions. I mean, it's been great for me as someone who bets the weekly one-on-matchups because I just use driving distance and putting. All the other criteria became remarkably irrelevant.

But from the standpoint of a golf fan they need to design more holes than favor shotmaking, like the 12th at Augusta. Narrowing the fairways is tricky because you don't want to take away the driver and stick wimpy irons or hybrids in their hands off the tee. I agree the rough should be more penal (penile?), and maybe more doglegs with increased penalty for cutting the corner and not being precise.
