UPS Driver Attacked By Middle School Students
http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_030190225.html

(CBS) BELLWOOD, Ill. A UPS driver was savagely beaten by middle school students while delivering packages in the western suburbs Friday.

The attack happened in Bellwood along the 3200 block of St. Charles. A teenager was arrested Monday after admitting he was involved in the incident. Another juvenile is expected to turn himself in Tuesday to appear in a line-up.

In a CBS 2 excusive, Joanie Lum talked to the man who was savagely beaten just trying to do his job.

UPS driver Thomas Murphy says he was beaten by a group of school kids on busy St. Charles Road in Bellwood, the route he has driven for 12 years.

He says a teenager walked out in front of his delivery truck Friday at about 3 p.m. When he stopped the truck, 15 to 20 youths surrounded him.

"Somebody clocked me with a pipe. I took kicks from my right. My eyes caked over. I tried to get up and defend myself as best I could," Murphy said.

4. It's not that bad of a neighborhood.
Bellwood is a lower middle class suburb like hundreds of others.

I think the real story is that these were middle schoolers. 7th & 8th graders.

9. Well I am quite sure
that there are some 7th and 8th graders in this town that I would not want to tangle with, particularly if one had a lead pipe, or if there was 20 of them and only one of me.

Also, I was joking since suburbs are usually supposed to be upper class, unlike the inner city

20. no I was joking about a suburb being a bad neighboorhood
and trying to understand how it could have happened.

Did I say something about Ken Lay?

Or are you just mad about what I said about the Vikings? :P

3. I am the parent of a middle schooler (6th grader) and I'm shocked.
What a terrible thing for that poor driver to experience!

I'd like to know where the hell the parents were in all this? It's a sad testament to the parenting these kids are receiving, if you ask me.

the article says "15-20 of them" ganged up on this UPS driver?! That's just amazing.

what is this world coming to??

Sigh....

7. Just payback for the savage beating UPS drivers give the boxes.
No, I'm not being serious. Yes, I've witnessed said beatings first hand, and have had it happen to boxes destined for my house.

having been in the truck, i've seen both extremes of drivers and loaders--those that take good care, and those that harbor sheer contempt for some packages....

and some of the blame does come from customers themselves; i've had to pick up packages that were taped or secured in a half-assed flimsy manner, or boxes that were way too big for the item it was holding with absolutely NO packing materials, and moldy, weather-beaten boxes that were being re-used for the 4th or 5th time....

however, the next time your local staff plays the nightly kickball game, i'll send them a message to NOT use any with DS1's home address on them!

17. Have you seen any teenagers lately?
Even at 12, some could be bigger than a lot of adults.

23. A Sign of a Sick Culture
I don't blame the media for causing this sort of thing, but it is a sign of the times that people pretend to be carjackers that murder hookers on PlayStation.

Or, more realistically, live in a world where it's okay to kill and terrorize people because of the Wars in your mind.

These kids just decided to beat the crap out of a vulnerable guy.

This poor guy needs some help. Those kids need to be stopped somehow.

What the hell kind of kid just decides to beat up someone? I guess I can understand stealing, but with 20 kids they could have had all of the UPS stuff they wanted without torturing the guy.

Stories like these make me so sad. :cries:
