5. That's really, really bad. Even by European standards, which

are pretty damn low regarding visual graphics. For example, is there ANYTHING more nightmare-inducing than the "mascots" for any Olympic Games that take place in Europe?

(Yes, I know OPEC isn't a European organization. But I'd bet my last dollar that logo was designed by a European company.)

European B2B advertising is legendarily lame.

And I disagree with yoru contention in general. There's plenty of crappy design out there; yes, much of it comes from America, but the European stuff tends to add preciousness and pretentiousness to its crappiness. At least the American stuff is just crappy in a simple way.

Crap is crap no matter where you go, but if we're talking about what's good, Europe--and increasingly Japan--is consistently better than US stuff.

I think it's because there's a greater cultural appreciation of good design in Europe and Japan. Paper money and mass transit design are fair benchmarks. Look at something like the Dutch guilder:







They even pick cool typefaces for 'SPECIMEN.' Meanwhile, our big currency redesign means moving the portrait off-center. Ooooooh. Daring.
