Major philosophical differences in a relationship.
My husband has never claimed to align himself with any political party other than the Republican one. He about bowled me over the other day, when he said that if he weren't so staunchly pro-life, he would likely "be a Democrat." I thought he was conservative on other issues, but perhaps not so. He also told me that if I ever had an abortion, he would never forgive me, and he would leave me! (I think he may have also said that he would "hate" me.) Fortunately, he's snipped, but I was a bit shocked that he'd even say that. I know we're on opposite pages about the issue, but geez!

Anyone else have a spouse whose stance(s) on an issue or range of issues is just incomprehensible to you?

1. My wife is a little more conservative than I am
For example she's pro death penalty...I'm not. I understand her position, I just disagree.

She's also not pro-socialism like I am, but hey....I like a good safety net.

2. None at all here
Same value system, morals, ethics, political positions, child rearing ideas, etc. all the way down the line.

(Actually, one thing too much in common, if you remember my past threads...)

sigh...

3. Oh, RL!
Is it okay that I laughed at the way you presented that last little "aspect"?

5. Of course it is...
Laughter is still present here too. We laugh about it together, even.

We will always be best friends, we've decided...

9. I'm glad.
I think humankind must have had a sense of humor from the beginning of its existence, or we'd never have perpetuated ourselves. She's lucky to have a friend like you.

7. My son's Dad is much more politically moderate and an omnivore
we didn't have much in common which was a big part of our break-up.

I actually had to talk him out of voting for duh-bya in 2000, but he'd quite glad he listened to me about that.

8. Sounds like your husband is more insecure than conservative.
All those damn scientists, philosophers and theologians can't figure out when life really begins, but by God, he's sticking by his "beliefs."

Sorry to dog your husband, but he sounds like a child on this issue.

13. I think that's a little much to read into one opinion
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 06:03 PM by jpgray
I completely disagree with that stance on abortion, but I know some people who believe the same and are neither childish nor insecure.

22. Men who say "I hate you," "I would leave you," etc....
sorry, childish.

I know pro-lifers too---they don't make threatening comments like that during arguments.

16. no
my husband is much more "radical" than me, always has been. Thinks the rich should be eaten and that most Republicans are the actual Anti-Christ, that sort of thing.

Mostly, we are extremly compatible -choice, ecology, etc. I used to live in a house full of Communists, Socialists, almost Maoists and those who thought the Revolution was actually just around the bend, so he actually seems moderate to me by Comparison! ;)

17. you know, a while back I was talking to my s.o. about something,
I think maybe the prison system and its inherent racism, or how slavery really still exists legally in this country, or something like that, and I blurted out, "Oh, I guess I'm just a communist, so don't listen to me..." or something, and she got really mad at me. Even mentioning the word "communist" got her all riled up. She's definitely a Dem, but I guess my views are so far to the left that they're too much even for most liberals. So I guess it's the other way around from what you are saying...my views are evidently totally incomprehensible to her!

Disclaimer: I am not actually a communist, although I do believe there are advantages to a planned economy (I mean aside from the plan being "the rich get richer and the poor go hungry")

18. An aside-- you do know there's a big anti-choice faction in the DFL?
Jackie Schweiz, the former head of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) is/was a longtime DFL activist. The (Hubert) Humphrys have also been pro-lifers, too, as was Rudy Perpich, the last DFL governor of MN.

There's also a lot of pro-choice Republicans, too, like former Gov. Arne Carlson. It's an issue that cuts across political lines.

19. We have some differences that cause me concern
For the most part, we're really well matched but there are some differences. He doesn't really have too many political opinions which sometimes bothers me but the ones he has mostly align with mine.

Where we differ is in the critical area of money. I'm a Yankee. I don't waste anything, certainly not money. I'm one of those people who if I won the lottery, I'd buy a nice tasteful home and probably help my kids with their expenses. He would throw a big party for everyone he's ever met, build a house the size of San Diego, buy a bunch of crap that he doesn't need, give money to all his friends as well as all the people who he thinks are friends but really aren't...

It's a good thing we don't have any money because if we did, I think it would cause some problems.
