Sports Trivia
Who plays in the stadium with the bigger seating capacity?

The NY football Giants or the NY Jets?

*NOTE- this information comes from the World Book Almanac (no link available). The Redskins play in the largest NFL stadium (80,116) and the KC Chiefs play in the FOURTH largest (79,451).

3. The Jets, because there are more empty seats when they play there.

6. okay... The Jets because
the Giants' fans big heads take up more room - so less people can fit in the seats.

:P

8. Actual v. potential
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 11:35 AM by dr.strangelove
The Giants/Jets play in the same place, the NJ Meadowlands Sports Authority's Giant Stadium. The official capacity is 80,242, which is second largest in the NFL to Washington. However, the Giants and Jets use less than full capacity, primarily due to using less disabled guest viewing slots then are actually available (to make it more comfortable) and putting less people in luxury boxes than slots designed. These things make for more comfort but a small reduction in seating. Also there is now a overflow press area taking up what were intended to be luxury boxes. I don't think these count in the capacity, though they could kick out press and sell the tickets.

The interesting question is whether both teams have the same number. I believe the authority gives control of ticket sales to the teams. There are slots for five disabled ticketholders and five guests in each disabled viewing area (don't know how many there are in the stadium), but I know the giants only put four pairs in each area. The Jets may do the full five slots or less. There may be other things like this that I am missing. I am sure the number is close, probably the same or within 100 seats of each other, but I don't know for sure.

This is a great question. Let me know the answer and I will stump my friends when we ae watching the SuperBowl. (I'm a Giants season ticketholder and will probably get a few free beers at the games out of this too, so thanks).

10. -ANSWER-
According to the World Book Almanac

The Giants play at Giants Stadium East Rutherford NJ capacity 79,469

The Jets play at Giants Stadium East Rutherford NJ capacity 79,466

I have no idea why the 3 seat difference. Are these the Mora's seats and (the other exec who recently passed)? Is it a "you can't out sell us at OUR ;-) stadium type thing?

I don't know but according to the World Book there is a difference.

I would assume that you know about the TWO kickoffs to start the second half of the first Super Bowl (CBS and NBS both telecast it-CBS was in a commercial so they rekicked it and PRAYED it wasn't run back for a TD while NBC went to a commercial).

Also NFL Films (the Sabols) have the only footage of the first Super Bowl. CBS and NBC didn't think it was important enough to save the film so they erased it and used it to preserve more meaningful shows like Lucy and Ed Sullivan.

11. Do you know where the term Super Bowl came from?
Lamar Hunt coined the term. He was watching his son bounce a super ball around the room and Lamar had a revelation...."we'll call the championship The Super Bowl."

True story. I once worked for Lamar and he relayed this to me over dinner one evening. Incredibly frugal man, but pleasant. I certainly admire much of what he has done for the NFL and US Soccer.

Also, little known fact about Lamar....he hasn't missed a World Cup since the early 60's. Huge soccer fan. Four years ago, he flew back and forth between Japan and Korea so that he wouldn't miss a US or Brazil game.

13. Hmmm
I am sure he is a very nice man. Interesting that he is such a soccer fan.

I will offer this from Dwight Eisenhower though

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

14. H.L. Hunt was his father.
I know there are some negatives to the Hunt family. And my experience working for them wasn't the best, but I still admire what he has done for the sports world, particularly his investment in soccer.

There are a lot of negatives, but I will say that Lamar has incredible vision. When he believes in something, he goes for it and puts his money where his mouth is.

But yes, his father and brothers have a somewhat shady past.

16. No, I have footage of the first Super Bowl too!
My uncle was there and filmed some of it with his Super 8 camera to send back to his brother, the rabid Packer fan...who later ended up being my dad. :P

18. I had not heard about the film, but know about the kickoff
So both networks erased the films. That is typical.
Thanks for the great question. I will have to ask about the 3 seat difference.

9. They play in the same stadium, so capacity is equal?
And I've been to Chiefs games that have broken that 80,000 mark. Standing room only, but they've broken that 80,000.

There are larger stadiums. For instance, the stadium at The University of Tennessee seats 105,000.

Nascar tracks have larger capacity than that!
