7. I learned the origin of that phrase recently

"to hell in a handbasket".

It apparently comes from the building of the transcontinental railroad when the tracks were being laid across the Sierras and Rockies. There was a ton of blasting to do and they'd lower one of the Chinese workers down in a basket (known as a handbasket) to set the dynamite charges. If he wasn't whisked up quickly enough, he was blown "to hell in his own handbasket."
