That's #8 on my list of all time favorite bands. I just love how Ian Anderson worked a mean flute into this music!!

But the difference between the #3 band and the #10 band is almost invisible to the naked eye. I love them all equally!!

6. They did some great stuff.
Really, among prog bands, Jethro Tull and King Crimson were the only popular ones who didn't neglect the "rock" half of "prog rock."

And you just can't fuck with a codpiece:

Take that any way you like.

I've been known to rock out to "Cross-Eyed Mary" in the car on occasion.

14. No doubt.
Though Yes and their spacey, noodly, crystal-gazing, disappearing-up-their-collective-ass ilk can go suck a fuck sideways forever, JT put out a 4-sided concept album about an old drunk with tuberculosis and it kicks ass. In anyone else's hands, that would have been unlistenable. They knew what the hell they were doing.

27. So you want me to bump the #10 above my #7 on the list
hmmmmm........

I do like their music and to be honest it's not like a giant leap between levels. But as much as I love the Beatles, ELO has the sentimental vote becaues it was the very first record I ever bought with my own money (I never count the 8-track of Shaun Cassidy that my mom bought me once).

I could probably bump the Beatles ahead David Bowie and Jethro Tull, but ELO could be tough.

What if I do this.

I'll move ELO up to the #6 slot, give the Beatles #7 and put King crimson into the #8 slot! Then #9 would be Jethro Tull and #10 would be David Bowie!

31. We're negotiating here
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 02:11 PM by LynneSin
There are many factors as to why I consider ELO above the Beatles. Remember, it's more than just who is the most talented (hell that would take Green Day well out of the top #10) but other factors such as enjoyment of the music, live concerts, possession of records and the fact that the Beatles were well broken up before I ever recalled listening to the radio but ELO was in their prime!! Basically it all gets down to 'moments' - key factors of my life and how it was integrated with the music that I love. This, btw, is the reason that there is nothing out there in the world of music that could ever top Led Zeppelin on my list. Some of the saddest times of my life, like dealing with my fathers death, I found hope with a stack of LZ vinyl, a pair of headphones and the volume at 10.

I will give you the fact that talent wise the Beatles would probably be #2 on my list if that was the soul factor. The Beatles have such an important hertitage that will carry throughout the history of music. But I don't have that many "Beatle" moments with their music like I do with "ELO" which is the main reason I cannot put the Beatles above ELO. Hell I'm starting to think that Bowie should actually get the #6 slot with ELO #7, King Crimson #8 and Beatles #9.

I'm shocked!!!

And I can't, like I said it isn't my list of most talented bands but the bands that I personally enjoy the most for a variety of reason. The numbers for ELO in my world just add up higher than that of the Beatles!

38. No. I Was A Big Fan!
Don't take Yes off! Just that i think The Beatles are sine qua non. There would be no Green Day or ELO, or Yes, et al, with them. So, i think they need to be de facto #1.

THey were pretentious as all hell after "Minstrel in the Gallery," but at least once an album, they kicked heavy ass. Hipper-than-thou types can kiss my ass: Tull's acheivements cannot be denied.

35. I Can Buy That
I'm a big fan, and have been since 1970, but there was a point at which they forgot to rock. Martin Barre had to be bored to tears in that period. But, recently the On Demand part of our cable had a relatively recent concert. (Well, 35 minutes of one.) They charged pretty hard on that one.

43. So what would your favorite Martin Barre moments be?
It's not a heavy guitar album, but Songs from the Wood has some kicka ss stuf on it. My aforementioned Pibroch Cap in Hand, wow, now if that wasn't a heavy ass guitar tone, I don't know what is.

\m/ Martin Barre \m/

Oh yeah, thanks for your reply pm==that was pretty much what I thought. After two decades I've gotten to the point where finger exercises don't sound like finger exercises!

44. There's Several
The solo on Aqualung is a masterpiece because of the way it builds, settles, and then rebuilds to the end, all very melodically.

The second guitar on Teacher is a lesson in counterpoint.

The extended solo on the live version of Thick As A Brick (Burstin' Out) is superb.

Mostly i think he has a great combination of tone, melody, and the ability to play on, behind, and in front of the rhythm that makes his playing unique. And, most importantly, he knows how to service the song, and not use the song as an excuse to play a solo.

17. Awesome stuff...
...and my all-time favorite band. I finally got to see 'em live, courtesy of Uncle Sam, following them for a few shows on the 25th anniversary tour. I've seen a couple more shows here in Atlanta, and Ian alone back in '03.

His melodies are not so memorable anymore, and his voice is nearly shot, but he's ten times the musician.

21. Great band
I love the nifty Celtic influences in the music - Songs From the Wood was one of my favorite albums. A lot of great diversity in the music, from the wailing rock and roll of Locomotive Breath to the introspectiveness of Skating Away to the leprechaun charm of Songs From the Wood.

Great stuff. I think I'll put some Tull on now.....

23. yeah, tull
This one always makes me tear up a little:

Wond'ring aloud --
how we feel today.
Last night sipped the sunset --
my hands in her hair.
We are our own saviours
as we start both our hearts beating life
into each other.

Wond'ring aloud --
will the years treat us well.
As she floats in the kitchen,
I'm tasting the smell
of toast as the butter runs.
Then she comes, spilling crumbs on the bed
and I shake my head.
And it's only the giving
that makes you what you are.

28. "Wind Up". My favorite Tull song.
Ian was never a big fan or organized religion.

Wind Up

When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was a fool.
So I left there in the morning
with their God tucked underneath my arm --
their half-assed smiles and the book of rules.
So I asked this God a question
and by way of firm reply,
He said -- I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):
before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers --
I don't believe you:
you had the whole damn thing all wrong --
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the bishops harmonize these lines --
how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son
when that was just an accident of Birth.
I'd rather look around me -- compose a better song
`cos that's the honest measure of my worth.
In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me,
as you lick the boots of death born out of fear.
I don't believe you:
you had the whole damn thing all wrong --
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays.

Martin Barre is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock history. A superb player with great ideas who just wanted to be part of the band. Very cool!

Favorite Song: Skating Away (On The Thin Ice Of A New Day)

Also, am very partial to Hymn 43.

Kept flipping Aqualung while reading The Talisman... and now those two are forever intertwined. Can't hear Wondering Aloud (or anything else off that album) without thinking of The Talisman, and can't think about The Talisman without hearing that music in my head.
