Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 09:50 AM by LynneSin
I can't believe the negativity I got from my Steve Miller Band thread. You folks must have lived repressed youths to not appreciate all that is good and alive with Steve Miller Band music.

So let's try another great classic of a band I absolutely adore (#7 on my list of all time favorite bands) - Electric Light Orchestra.

You just had to love their groovy progressive sounds integrated with electric strings orchestration. No matter how bad of a mood, an ELO song would turn my mood around into a happy happy one

And this is the very first vinyl record AND cd I ever bought!!!

(kinda felt I had to keep in tradition, next CDs I bought was Led Zeppelin II and Ziggy Stardust)

And just think - if I married the lead singer of ELO I would officially be Lynne Lynne (Lead Singer is Jeff Lynne)

28. I agree....
Even though Jeff Lynne disparaged their work on "Xanadu" later. I thought it was and still think that it's great stuff.

Great songwriting, wonderful arrangements, incredible production....Jeff Lynne is a master at creating baroque pop.

I give you an unqualified  for this one, Lynne.

Both he and Roy Wood were great songwriters in their prime.

8. My very first concert, ever, was the Out of the Blue tour
It was a heap of fun to see those guys w/ the cellos playing those things over their heads and throwing them into the air. The music was good too.

Jeff Lynne is extraordinarily talented, as a musician and a producer. I was saddened to see Bev Bevan leave the band (I think he moved to Black Sabbath...????)

Listening to ELO when you're a kid is one thing, but you're an adult now.

12. Naw, On the Third Day through Eldorado are probably their best
The first album had about three decent songs on it, and one was just an "I Am the Walrus" ripoff.

15. I Think Everything After The Third Is Grossly Overproduced
The vocals sound like their coming from the cellar, because they're so over-multed. There's no EQ spacing on everything, as Lynne tried to become the new Phil Spector and just puke over every single spot of every single song.

I hate that "wall of sound" thing where there is no open space left. It makes it truly a wall, and sucks the depth right out of the sound. I haven't liked a single thing he has produced for others either. So, i guess that's just my ear. Different strokes. . .

17. They were my first "favorite band" back in the late 70s, when
I was 13 or 14, and although my tastes changed and evolved through the years, I've always felt some affinity for them - haven't bought any CDs of theirs (everything was from back in the vinyl era), but I do have a Best Buy gift card in my wallet waiting to get used...hmmmm...

I remember playing "Out of the Blue" until I practically wore it out!

25. First time I heard ELO, I was hooked
It was on "Midnight Special" when it was still good and they did "Roll Over Beethoven." I was a dyed-in-the-wool fan of pure rock 'n' roll, but I'd never dreamed of it being done that way — nor of three guys playing one cello.

Rock and strings are a great marriage.

35. Everything up to (and including Time) pretty much rocked.
I could have done without some of the jarring electronic beeps and buzzes on Time, but apart from that, it should have marked a new era of greatness for ELO. It didn't. :-(

Zoom was pretty damned good, too. Wasn't that one of the last things George Harrison was involved with before he died? You sure knew when it was him playing guitar. Shame radio never supported it.

38. My father, who refused to purchase any of that subversive rock music
:eyes: ...heard the opening of El Dorado in a record store, and told the cashier that it was about time they started playing classical music while he shopped. He bought the album, brought it home, had this delightful look on his face as he conducted with his index finger as he often did.

Then the group broke into a full-wailing-rock sound and we watched his blood pressure shoot up like a skyrocket. "SHIT! GOD DAMN! WHAT IS THIS CRAP?!?!
